Listed below are some of the many letters written by soldiers while stationed at Camp Moore and even a few of soldiers not necessarily connected to Camp Moore. We feel that these letters, though very private at the time, give us a great insight into what was on the minds of these men as they were thrust into war. There is a great human story here, of men that loved their families, their State and their new country. There is unspeakable hardship and sorrow in many of these notes. The human and personal side of this war is so evident in the individual letters. It is the determination, devotion and strength of so many of these brave men that is reflected in the following:
I who was born by the battlefields,
Cannot escape a sorrow that dwells,
A valor that lingers,
A hope that spoke on lips now still.
Click on the various hyperlinks to view the letters. Sources are quoted where applicable. Please note that the spelling in the original letters is preserved in these transcriptions, exactly as written. We have many more soldier's letters in our files at Camp Moore. We are also actively seeking letters, diaries, journals, etc. of men that were at Camp Moore, passed through Camp Moore or were simply Louisiana soldiers. We do NOT ask for your original letters, etc.....only a copy or transcription that we may put in our research facility or on this website. Please be assured that all donors will be properly credited.
