It is not known exactly how many men died at Camp Moore. Records from the camp itself did not survive the war. What we do know is that there were two large epidemics of measles in the Camp in late 1861 and again in the Spring of 1862. Other men died of various other maladies such as various fevers, chronic diarrhea and pneumonia. Research into various sources has turned up the following list of names of men that died at Camp Moore. It is also not known how many of these men's bodies were taken home for burial by family or friends. The cemetery at Camp Moore is all that remains of that once lively and spirited Camp where thousands of men started their journey to war. The cemetery is what gives Camp Moore that special meaning that now gives it the title of "sacred ground". The cemetery is a tribute to a breed of men that were willing to leave family and a home to go off to war and defend that home from invaders. It is a tribute to men that never once saw the face of a blue-coated enemy, never lifted that gun in anger or defense, never saw the face or felt the touch of a loved one again. Their enemy turned out to be disease. Yet, they are no less heroic than the man that came home from Appomattox or the ones that lay dead on the plain below Franklin, Tennessee. Each gave or was willing to give his full measure.... to his home, to his family, to his country. May God have mercy on them all.
