SEASON RECAP

Definitely a hard luck start for our new team: we finished the season tied for first, but Chickering won the division on tiebreaks. The first bit of hard luck came against last-place finisher Piedmont Bend, who managed to field their "A" line-up against us but had line-up problems every other week, even forfeiting matches in the latter half of the season. However, the biggest setback to our bagtag chances was without doubt the infamous "sandbag match", in which Chickering played two beginners at the #1 spot to improve their chances for a positive result. Using two beginners at #1 is a blatant violation of the sandbag rule, of course, but the ALTA Vice President rejected my sandbag claim, saying that 6-0 6-0 results "happen all the time". He also didn't see any point in checking out for himself the playing level of those beginners who were on the #1 spot that day.

For the first round of the playoffs, we drew the team with the highest point total in our half of the draw: Southland in Stone Mountain. (There was a nice view of Stone Mountain as we played our match.) "The Jamaicans" from Southland were certainly a colorful and gregarious bunch, and we only managed to win one point from them. However, I noted with some satisfaction that Chickering was also eliminated in round 1, as the C-4 co-ordinator, who seemed to take my side in the sandbag dispute, was careful to check the Chickering line-up for any suspicious player placements.

Southland won their next two playoff match as well, reaching the City Finals at DeKalb Tennis Center. They lost 3-2 in the finals to a team from Summerchase in Gwinnett county.
