SEASON RECAP

Maybe the regular season was too easy. Except for a lapse in week 3 when we played Northside Athletic Club on their clay courts (I guess clay wasn't our surface), we pretty much cruised through this division and won it by 10 points. It's remarkable that Northside Athletic Club was able to take clear second with only 19 points, and the difference was the three points they were able to take from us on their home courts as we were beating everybody else 4-1 or 5-0.

However, then the playoffs started, and, sheesh, the high drama in those playoff matches more than made up for the routine of our regular season...

The round 1 match against North Forke was astonishing. The #2s suffered their only loss of the season - in a third set tie-breaker, no less - but that was only the beginning. The #3 spot went to a third set, and our #3s were only one game away from winning a key point when the muscle cramps in one of our players became so severe he was unable to continue. So, we ended up forfeiting a match in which we were up 5-3 in the third set. The #5s won in straight sets to even the match score, but the #4s had to pull off a miracle comeback - down 1-5 in the second set after losing the first set 2-6, they rallied, won the second set in a tiebreaker, then took the third 7-5.

The second round match played one day later was no less melodramatic. We won the #1s and #2s quickly, but the Arden Trace evened the match by taking the #3s and #5s. That left it up to the #4s again to decide the result in a marathon match, finally decided in a third set tiebreaker.

Arden Trace followed up this narrow victory with a quick win in the semifinals, then beat a team from Silver Ridge in the City Finals by winning the #1, #2, and #5 spots. One tiebreaker may have been the difference between us and a City Championship.
