"....and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection" (Hebrews 11:35)

Persecution

Above is a painting of early Christians facing the lions in the Roman coliseum. The illustration shows them praying and faithfully standing in the face of death. Literally thousands were martyred like this during the first 200 years of Christianity.

This example of courage and faith under duress is suffering and persecution at it's most extreme point. Persecution though, is usually not this trying.

Persecution is defined as "To harass to a point of suffering for one's beliefs, especially religious beliefs. We are persecuted when we are taunted, harassed, physically or mentally assulted because we vocalize beliefs different to the "powers that be".

The Bible makes clear four points:

1) All people, both Christian and non-christian suffer persecution

2) Suffering persecution is essential to the Christian

3) Suffering persecution builds character, brings blessings and builds the Kingdom of God

4) Suffering persecution guarantees rewards in Heaven
