STEWART PORTWOOD
Steward Portwood, 72, of Columbus, died July 23 at his home. Funeral services were held July 26 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel with Reverend Udell Addison and Reverend Mike Reeves officiating. Active pallbearers were Bobby Waldrop, Jim Green, Roy Purvis, Curtis Burris, Donnie Wise, Virgil Colbert and Andy Hines.
Mr. Portwood was born August 21, 1928 in Carrolton, the son of Dora Stewart Portwood of Columbus and the late Reverend Shay Portwood. He had lived in Columbus since 1959 and was a member of Glenn Anthony Baptist Church. He was formerly a member of Second Baptist Church where he served as organist and pianist and had managed A & P Food Stored for 17 years prior to retiring from Sears & Roebuck in 1990 with 24 years of service.
Survivors, other than his mother, include his wife, Carolyn M. Portwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael S. and Patricia M. Portwood; two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda C. Williamson and Lisa M. and Mike Glenn, all of Columbus; a brother, R. Donald Portwood, of Fayetteville; a sister, Phyllis S. Hollstrom of Manchester; three grandchildren, Brian Wise, Megan Glenn and Dylan Glenn; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ruby Irene Thompson, 84, of Manchester, passed away July 28 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted July 20 at the West End Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend T.P. Hadley officiating, assisted by Reverend Kyle Woodfin.
Burial was at Macedonia Church Cemetery with Lennis Tarpley, Billy Paul Moncrief, Wendell Ward, Bill Slaughter, Gene Avery, and Woodie Harper serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Thompson was born April 16, 1917 in Fulton County, the daughter of the late James Emory Lanier and the late Nancy Charlotte Peavey Lanier. She was retired from Callaway Mills Company in the weave department and was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Sistrunk of Manchester; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Barbara Thompson of Rosewell, New Mexico; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Thompson; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Julian B. Thompson; one son, Joe Thompson; one granddaughter, Jennie Lupes; and two infant granddaughters.

Henry Scott Crowder, 80, of Warm Springs, died July 29 at his residence. Graveside services were held July 31 at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery, Durand, with Rev. Gene Davis officiating, assisted by Reverend Mickey Grubb.
Serving as pallbearers were Willis Woodruff, Sonny Lyons, Willis Godowns, Jimmy Poulson, W.D. Crowder, Harvey Lemmon and Gary Bishop.
Mr. Crowder was born August 31, 1910 in Meriwether County, a son of the late Henry S. and Myrtie Hutcherson Crowder. He was a cattle farmer, and was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on the Church Board of Stewards, and was a teacher of the Mens Bible Class. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, a graduate of Manchester High School and West Georgia College, and was the third generation of his family to serve as Treasurer of the Warm Springs Camp Ground. He was a member of the Meriwether County Cattlemans Association, the American Legion and served on the Board of Directors and was a former President of the Georgia Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Jackie" Kyzar Crowder of Warm Springs; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carolyn and Ron Jones of Suwanee, Jennie Crowder of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and Margaret C. and Johnny Lawrence of Auburn, Alabama; one brother, N.R. "Dickie" Crowder of Warm Springs; three sisters, Jane C. Williams, Glenn Crowder, and Judy Fryer, all of Pine Mountain; three grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Ronald Jones and Julie Lawrence.

Mr. Spain was born October 18, 1922 in Phenix City, Alabama, a son of the late Lila Mae Murphy Spain and the late Eugene Spain, Sr., He was a member of the Manchester First Baptist Church, was an Army veteran of World War II and was a Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Spain of Manchester; two daughters, Gail Pike and Debbie Metzler, both of Manchester; one son, Mickey Spain of Douglas; one sister, Carolyn Turner of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Burial followed at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Mr. Kendrick was born October 26, 1927 in Clinton, Tennessee, son of the late Joyce ONeal Kendrick and the late J. B. Kendrick. He was a retired truck driver, was an Air Force Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was a member of Manchester Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice Kendrick of Woodland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chip and Toni Kendrick of Riverdale, and Rocky and Tonja Kendrick of Thomaston; one daughter and son-in-law, Kristie and Ken Curto of Fairburn; four granddaughter and one grandson-in-law, Jennifer and Kevin Winegard of Fairburn, Shannah Kendrick of Stockbridge, Allison Ratzlaff of Fairburn; four grandsons, Chase, Hunter, Cameron and Jordan Kendrick, all of Thomaston; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Bud Palmer of Knoxville, Jewel Lay of Claxton, Tennessee, and Emma and Chris Norman, also of Claxton; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Mont and Nancy Kendrick of Claxton, and Helen Kendrick of Jasper, Alabama.

Mrs. Jacquelyn A. Russell of Canton, Ohio passed away July 18 after a lengthy illness. Memorial services were held July 22 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Canton with Pastor Robert Dye officiating, followed by the Delta Sigma Theta Services. A final eulogy was held July 25 at Rust Chapel United Methodist Church in Greenville with Reverend W. Cortez Golphin officiating. Interment was in Greenville City Cemetery.
Mrs. Russell was born in Greenville, a daughter of Adele Banning and the late Willie Banning. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Senior Choir, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Canton Professional Educators Association.
Survivors, other than her mother, include her husband, Verner S. Russell of Canton; one son, Jason Russell of Atlanta; one daughter, Erica Russell of Canton; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Annie and Claude Warrior of Manchester, and Judy Fultz of Macon; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Lincoln Banning and Larry Banning, both of Greenville, and Kenneth and Linda Banning of Stone Mountain; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, one uncle, and a number of close friends. In addition to her father, Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by a brother, Carlton Banning.

Mrs. Terry was born June 22, 1913 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Lawrence and Emma Huntley-Body. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and was the widow of the late Jesse Terry.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Jessie Mae Copeland, Mrs. Jeannie Mae Jenkins, Mrs. Mattie Lee (Bill) Hodo, all of Manchester, Mrs. Emma Grimmett of Camilla, Mrs. Bonnie Jean (Dave) Lucas of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Mrs. Betty Ann (Noland) Dixon of Los Angeles, California; four sons, C.L. Velton J. Harmon, 40, of the Flint Hill area of North Talbot County passed away Thursday, August 2 in Columbus under the care of Hospice Center.
Funeral services were held at Valley Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. August 7 with pastor Reverend Jimmie Copeland officiating.
Mr. Harmon was born September 9, 1960 in Wadley, Georgia and his early education was in the public schools of Wadley. Upon graduation, he attend Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, then on to Troy State University in Phenix City, Alabama, receiving a six year degree in Administration.
After completion of college at Fort Valley State, he moved to the Talbot County area where he resided until his departure from this life. In this community he offered and gave himself freely toward service and advancement thereof. Just to name a few of his many accomplishments, he served as a classroom teacher and FFA advisor at Central Elementary/High School and also served on the Talbot County Board of Commissioners, later named as the Board Chairman.
He came to the Lord and accepted Him as Savior as a young man at the Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley. In keeping with the Church Covenant, upon relocation to this area, he joined the Valley Grove Baptist Church, later to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Deacon Ministry.
With his passing, left with heavy hearts; his mother, Ida Harmon Cummings of Wadley; a grandmother, Viola Cordy of Wadley; four sisters, Mary Boston of Covington, Viola Cummings and Cherly (Tommie) Butts of Wadley, and Ida (James) Scott of Savannah; six brothers, Johnnie Boston of Wadley, Willie (Theo) Boston of Hephzibah, Larris Boston of Jacksonville, Florida and Stony Cummings of US Navy, Jacksonville, Florida, Melvin Harmon of Augusta, and Terry Cummings of US Army, Fort Brag, North Carolina; a devoted and unique friend, Verna P. Holt of Talbotton; two goddaughters, Jasmine Neal and Jerniya Hardnett of Stone Mountain; two close and dearest friends Annie Durham and Daphne Hardnett; 13 nephews; seven nieces and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
After services Tuesday from the sanctuary of his beloved Valley Grove Church, he was laid to rest in the church cemetery.

Larry Stewart Etheridge, 68, of Manchester, died August 2 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were conducted August 4 at Macedonia Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend J. D. Templeton, Reverend Francis Gibson and Reverend Charles Johnson officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brad Dunn, Billy Whisnant, Donald Brown, Jimmy Rogers, Everett Crews, Jamie Willingham, Marvin Brown and Clint Connell. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Mr. Etheridge was born December 18, 1932 in Lowndes County, son of the late John C. Etheridge and the late Minnie Byrd Wilson Etheridge. He was a retired equipment operator for Georgia-Pacific Corporation, was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Trustee, and was active in all church activities.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Williams Etheridge of Manchester; one daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Jimmy Hamby of Thomaston; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Brenda Etheridge of Manchester, and Doug and Debbie Etheridge of Pine Mountain Valley; one sister, Marion Dunn of Pine Mountain; three brothers, Mack Etheridge of Riverdale, John Etheridge of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and Delma Etheridge of Villa Rica; six grandchildren; three step granddaughters.

Mr. Hill was a native of Chester County and a son of the late Thomas and Bertha Ben Hill. He was a US Army veteran, having served in the Korean War, was a retired manufacturing designer and was of the Baptist faith.

He was retired from the Brace Shop of the former Georgia Warm Springs Foundation.

Mrs. Pye was born August 30, 1915 in Randolph County, Alabama, daughter of the late Freeman Wilson Norris and the late Emma Gene Steven Norris. She was retired after 30 years of service as Tupperware manager from Southern Party Sales. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Geanell P. Cook of LaGrange and Janice P. and Ed Smith of Chattanooga, Tennessee; six grandchildren and their spouses, Gina and Jonathan Smolen of Acworth, Gerry Cook of Largo, Florida, Gay and Lewis Davis of LaGrange, G. Mrs. Anne E. Brewton, 89, of Claxton, died August 18 at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton. Funeral services were held August 21 at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Eric Sizemore and Reverend John W. Powell officiating. Interment was at Brewton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Anthony Brewton, Charles Edwards, Pharris Rogers, Carroll Anderson, Jr., Homer Sapp, Waldo (Punky) Rogers and Kenneth Durrence.
Mrs. Brewton was a native of Manchester, but moved to Claxton in 1940. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Claxton and was the wife of the late S. Turner Brewton. She was a graduate of Sanford University College of Nursing in Birmingham, Alabama, and served as the Evans County Health Nurse for 36 years. The New York Nurses Association honored her with a Letter of Congratulations for serving in one location for that many consecutive years.

Mrs. Janie Mae Pascal Weaver, 81, passed away August 11 at Muscogee Manor in Columbus. Funeral services were held August 16 at Flint River Baptist Church in Woodland with Reverend Joseph Colquitt officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Weaver was born March 3, 1920 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Caleb and Bertha Pascal. She joined Flint River Baptist Church at an early age and was joined in holy matrimony to the late Alex Weaver.
Survivors include four daughters, Mattie Powell (Sammie) Little of Junction City, Ruby (Horace) Baker of Alexander City, Alabama, Willene (Tyrone) Sledge of Pine Mountain, and Linda (Javelja) Weaver of Thomaston; five sons, Willie Joe (Lula Ann) Weaver of Atlanta, John Henry (Earnestine) Weaver of Talbotton, Clyde (Jane) Weaver of Thomaston, James Weaver of Talbotton and Jessie (Sharon) Weaver of Geneva; one sister, Annie Lou Owens of Woodland; four sisters-in-law, Inez Waller of Manchester, Fannie Hobb of Woodland, Annie Lou Weaver of Omaha, Nebraska, and Ella Copeland of Manchester; 33 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Weaver was preceded in death by three children, Susie (Charlie Ivey) Searcy, Benny Joe Weaver, and Rudolph Weaver, and three brothers, Lovett Pascal, Lester Pascal, and Robert Lee Pascal.

Grady Carter Bradshaw, Sr., 75, of Manchester, passed away August 25 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. Funeral Services were conducted August 27 at Northside Baptist Church with Reverend Cullen Clements officiating, assisted by Reverend Tommy Harrison.
Burial was at Manchester City Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers were Allen Self, Vernon Miller, Harold Kierbow, Sonny Collier, Herb Adams, and Clinton Bonner. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Garner, Dan Branch, Robert Kellum, M. B. Guy, Tub Kellum, and Leonard Wigley.
Mr. Bradshaw was born May 27, 1926 in Talbot County, son of the late Walter B. and Lovie Belle Bradshaw. He was the retired owner-operator of Bradshaws Grocery & Cold Storage, was a US Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Brotherhood chairman. He served two terms as a Meriwether County Commissioner and four years as chairman.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Self Bradshaw of Manchester; one son, Grady C. Bradshaw, Jr., also of Manchester; three daughters, Joan Jones of Rome, Carol Winkles of Shiloh, and Ginger Bradshaw of Manchester; four sisters, Alice B. Cuddington of Thomaston, Ruth Sutton of Cuthbert, Grace Parker of Culloden, and Betty McDaniel of Thomaston; two brothers, Sonny Bradshaw of Manchester and Billy Bradshaw of Woodbury; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Little Miss Judith Hannah Ray and Little Miss Leah Haleigh Ray, twin daughters of Thomas C. and Beth Petty Ray of Manchester passed away August 24 at Upson Regional Hospital in Thomaston. Funeral services were held at Trinity Baptist Church August 28 with burial at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Survivors, other than their parents, include one brother, Bo Ray; two sisters, Laura Ray and Lyndi Ray, all of Manchester; maternal grandparents, Larry and Mary Lou Petty, also of Manchester; paternal grandparents, Greg and Gayle OConner of Tampa, Florida; maternal great grandmother, Marion Petty of Montgomery, Alabama; aunts, Judy Petty of Manchester, Leah and Tom Jennus of Tampa and Myra and Charles Amason of Manchester. They were predeceased by their paternal grandfather, Curtis C. Ray.

Walter Harold Tucker, 80, of Manchester, died August 25 at Doctors Hospital in Columbus.
Funeral Services were held August 28 at Manchester First United Methodist Church with burial in Manchester City Cemetery, according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester.
Officiating minister was Reverend Bruce Bunten, pastor of Manchester First United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers were Robert Kellum, Jack Buchanan, Lee Wadsworth, George NeSmith, M.B. Guy, Frank Carter, Danny Wadsworth and Dennis Hudgins.
Mr. Tucker was born September 9, 1920 in Manchester, son of the late Walter Rogers Tucker and the late Blanche LaGrone Tucker. He was a graduate of Auburn University and was a member of Tau Beta Pi Honor Society and Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Fraternity. He later worked for the University as Director of its Co-Op Program. Mr. Tucker was a World War II Army veteran having served in the Special Engineering Detachment Unit that worked on the Manhattan Project and retired from the General Services Administration as a Civil Engineer.
He was a member of Manchester First United Methodist Church were he served as President of the Mens Bible Class, and was also a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Gauntt Tucker of Manchester; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Al Hudgins of Savannah; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, W. Dennis and Cindy Hudgins of Savannah; one great granddaughter, Madison Baynes Hudgins of Savannah; one brother, Bill Tucker of Chattanooga, Tennessee; four sisters, Ruth Woodyard of LaGrange, Helen Evans of Manchester, Joan Wolff of Louisville, Kentucky and Jean Carter of Nashville.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Tucker may be made to Manchester First United Methodist Church Renovation Fund.
