SYLVESTER HOBSON ARD
June 5, 1907 - January 24, 2000

Sylvester Hobson Ard, 92, of Manchester, died January 24 at Riverside Nursing Home in Thomaston. Funeral services were conducted January 27 at Mt. Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Lott officiating, assisted by Reverend David Henthorne. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ard was born June 5, 1907 in Geneva County, Alabama, son of the late Robert Lee and Emmie Iola Pumprey Ard. He was retired from the maintenance department at Callaway and Milliken Mills, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Roger H. Ard of Dawsonville and Eddie J. Ard of Smyrna; one sister, Leola Summers of Wauchula, Florida; three grandchildren, Jackson Patrick Ard, Thomas Hunter Ard, and John Wesley Ard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Ard.

Frances Komiski, 79, of Woodland, died January 28 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services were held January 31 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road, Chapel with interment in Parkhill Cemetery.

Mrs. Komiski was born June 25, 1920 in Albany, daughter of the late Benjamin and Katie Kaiser Moon. She was a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church in Ellerslie and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Paul M. Komiski of Woodland; sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan and Brenda Komiski of Smiths, Alabama, Wilson Cline Bussey, Jr., and Teresa of Opelika, Alabama; daughters and sons-in-law, Janine and John Mitchell of Summerville, South Carolina, Pamela and Marshal Cullifer of Homewood, Alabama; sister, Marjorie Erwin of Americus; fifteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

SAMMIE WALLER, SR.
September 11, 1924 - January 24, 2000

Sammie Waller, Sr., 75, died January 24 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were conducted January 27 at Greentown Heights Church of Christ with Brother Anthony Hixson officiating. Interment was in Pineview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Shiloh.

Mr. Waller was born September 11, 1924 in Harris County, son of the late Fen and Annie Fuller Waller. He was a member of the Greentown Heights Church of Christ and preached and taught classes throughout Georgia and Alabama. He was a retired auto mechanic and was a loom fixer for Callaway Mills and Milliken for 40 years. During his retirement, he loved visiting the nursing homes in the area and chatting with the ones he met.

Survivors include four children, Annie Ruth (Roger) Brawner, Shirley (James) Terry, Sammie (Liza) Waller, Jr., and Susie Farley, all of Manchester; two sisters, Christine (George) Satterwhite of Pine Mountain, Emma Waller of Irvington, New Jersey; four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts and friends. A sister, Mrs. Susie M. Bridges, and a brother, Eddie Waller, preceded him in death.

Mrs. Lucille Pritchard Friend, 80, of Hogansville, died January 30 at Hospice LaGrange. The funeral service was conducted February 1 in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Wesley Boatman officiated and interment was in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Albany.

Mrs. Friend was born September 26, 1919 in Worth County, daughter of the late William and Lenny Barry Pritchard. She lived in Albany before making her home in Hogansville in 1975 and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. She was the wife of the late Joseph Edward Friend, who was a former police chief of Newnan and was serving as police chief of Albany at the time of his death in 1974. Mrs. Friend was preceded in death by a son, Robert Friend, and a daughter, Lynelle Friend.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lea Friend Lacy of Valdosta; one son, Edward H. Friend, Sr., of Hogansville; and four grandchildren, Edward H. Friend, Jr. of Warm Springs, Mrs. Debra Reynolds of Newnan, Michael Friend of Hogansville and Mrs. Shawn Pagelow of Albany.

Allee Huel, 87, died January 22 at the V.A. Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. Funeral services were held January 28 at Mt. Sinai C.M.E. Church in Manchester with the Reverend Walter Barnes officiating. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery in Manchester.

Mr. Huel was born April 1, 1912, in Harris County, son of the late Edward and Lelia Roberts Huel. He was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai C.M.E. Church, served in the Army, and was the widower of the late Bessie Gamble Huel.

Survivors include Mrs. Alberta Roberts of Waverly Hall, Robert and Bernadette Thiele Alfiedia, Leroy, Jeremaine, Carla and Kevin Terry of Manchester, Doris, Spencer, Lashunda Huel; Sarah, Josephine and George Gamble Carter, Debbie, D.J. and Zack Gamble, Willie C. Shirley, Linda, Sarah and Cynthia Huff, Kathy and Douglas; two very special people, Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Bowden; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 5, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Manchester. Burial will follow in St. Paul C.M.E. Church Cemetery.

Reedy is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Stella Hardnett of Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. Jean Terry of Manchester; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

The cortege will assemble Saturday, January 5, 2000 at 12:30 p.m. at Lofton McDougal Funeral Home located at 416 Perry Street in Manchester.

Mrs. Mary Katherine Burk, 78, of Pine Mountain died January 27 at Doctors Hospital in Columbus. Graveside services were held January 30 at Woodbury City Cemetery with Reverend Carol Scroggs, pastor of Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mrs. Burk was born December 27, 1921 in Woodbury, daughter of the late Katherine Evans Bowden and the late Warren Wesley Bowden. She was a former research science technician, was a member of Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church where she had served as a treasurer of the Louise Miller Circle, and was a member of the Gahana Garden Club of Harris County.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Buck of Pine Mountain; one sister, Martha Bowden of Warm Springs; one brother, Joseph Bowden of Luthersville; a number of nieces and nephews.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Burk may be made to Pine Mountain First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Luther Milton Chapman, 77, of Ocilla, Georgia (formerly of Shiloh), died Tuesday, January 25, 2000.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Steve King, pastor of Shiloh First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Shiloh Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Chapman was born September 21, 1922, the son of the late Clarence Chapman and Omega (Meggie) Bufford Chapman of Shiloh. He was a retired spinner from Callaway Mills and a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Chapman was a member and deacon of Old Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mr. Chapman is survived by his very good friends, Billy McDaniel of Shiloh and several cousins.

Ruby Steed, formerly of Manchester, died Monday, January 24, 2000 in Stockbridge, Georgia.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 29, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester with the Reverend Brawner officiating.

Mrs. Steed was born on December 25, 1946 in Manchester. She was the fifth child of the late Hance Garmon and Addie Garmon. Mrs. Steed was a devout Christian and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Mrs. Steed was employed with several companies in the Manchester area, including Pizza Hut where she served as a supervisor.

Although a Manchester native, she moved to Maryland to be near her son and operated her own day care center at Fort Mead Army base. She had recently moved to Stockbridge to serve as caretaker for her aging mother.

Mrs. Steed was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Steed. She is survived by two sons, Randy Garmon of Atlanta and Courtlant Holt of Malikah; one daughter, Marcia Flemister (Thomas) of Atlanta; three brothers, Stacy Garmon, Curtis Garmon and Russell Garmon; four sisters, Annie Anderson, Leila Brown, Gloria Meridith and Mary Garmon; 11 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Minister Corine Howe, 76, of Warm Springs, died Saturday, January 8, 2000 at LaGrange Hospice Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 13, 2000 at Leverette Hill Baptist Church in Warm Springs with Reverend Tracy Neal officiating. Burial followed in the Leverette Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Howe was a native of Meriwether County and the daughter of the late Ida Hixon. She was a devout Christian and gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a member of Leverette Hill Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and became a minister in 1988 under the leadership of Reverend John T. O’Hara. She was president of missionary, where she served faithfully until her health failed.

Mrs. Howe was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Howe. She is survived by four daughters, Ida Bell Walton, Elizabeth Howe, Darlene Dunlap (Robert), and Patricia Gates, all of Warm Springs; five sons, Jimmy Lee (Louise), Ben Howe, Jr., both of Atlanta, Sam Howe, Larry Howe (Geraldine), both of Warm Springs and Raiford Howe of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Hattie Crawl and Georgia Womble, both of Warm Springs; one step-brother, Jessie Ben Hixon (Lucille) of LaGrange; one step-sister, Mattie Pearl Hixon of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellison of Manchester; 34 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 33 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. James Dawson Osborn, 79, of Columbus died Sunday January 30, 2000.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Watson McKemie officiating. Burial followed in the Old South Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Osborn was born August 27, 1920, son of the late Walter B. Osborn in Chambers County, Alabama.

Mr. Osborn had been a resident of Columbus for two years, having moved there from Shiloh from where he had resided for over 25 years. He served as a Merchant Marine for 23 years, was a member of the Coast Guard and was a World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margaret W. Osborn.

He is survived by his wife, Flora Starling of Auburn; one daughter, Martha Ann Broach and son-in-law Tom Broach of Woodland; two sons, James (Ceretha) Osborn of Columbus and Walter L. Osborn of West Point; two step-sons, Wiley Moree of Starkville, Mississippi and John Sterling, III of Cragford, Alabama; two step-daughters, Zula Stewart of Anniston, Alabama and Patricia Starling of Chipley, Florida; one brother, Fred Osborn of Abanda, Alabama; three sisters, Loretta Burke of Roanoke, Alabama, Annie Bee Dabbs of Bessemer, Alabama and Lucille Berry of Montgomery, Alabama; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Mrs. McDaniel was born March 21, 1940, the daughter of the late Thomas P. Reese, Sr. and Ruby Frances Rooker Reese of Newnan. Mrs. McDaniel had been a resident of Manchester for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury.

Mrs. McDaniel is survived by her husband, Jackie McDaniel of Manchester; one sister, Helen Stanfield of The Rock, Alabama; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Reverend Arthur William Reynolds, 76, of Milledgeville, formerly of Shiloh, died February 1 at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville. Funeral services were conducted February 4 at Community Chapel with Reverend Ricky Lipp officiating and eulogies by Toby Bradshaw and Melody Belcher. Burial was at Pine Mountain Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Reynolds, Lavonne Moon, Shane Lipp, Jason Belcher, Greg Patisaul and Marty McKay. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Mann, Mike Moon, Mark Reynolds and Dennis Reynolds.

Reverend Reynolds was born August 29, 1923 in Harris County, son of the late Johnny Coleman Reynolds and the late Ada Duke Reynolds. He was a retired minister and dry cleaner, was a veteran of the US Navy, having served during World War II, and was a member of Grace Family Church in Manchester.

Survivors include one daughter, Pam Borders of Milledgeville; one son, Gerald Reynolds of Destin, Florida; four brothers, J. C. Reynolds of Shiloh, Billy Reynolds of Howard, Fred Reynolds of Cataula, and Larry Reynolds of Hamilton; four sisters, Myrdie Grant of Shiloh, Minnie Moon of Pine Mountain, Elaine Lipp of Hamilton, and Elizabeth Buford, also of Pine Mountain; four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Reynolds.

The funeral service was conducted February 4 in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Ed Elliott officiated and interment was in Alvaton Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Bowles, Bill Hamby, Richard Taylor, Gene Taylor, Kersh McIntyre and Jason Jordan.

Miss McCarty was born March 12, 1986 and was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County. She attended Alvaton Baptist Church and was a student at Greenville Middle School.

Survivors include her parents, Lynn and Randy McCarty of Alvaton; two half-brothers, Ronald Steven Moon and David James Moon, Jr., both of Texas; her grandmother, Judy Strickland of Monticello; her great grandparents, John and Rosa White of Jackson; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral service was conducted February 5 in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Jay Moore and the Reverend Morgan Dunn officiated and interment was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan. Pallbearers were Danny Ellsworth, Michael Ellsworth, Ralph Clay, Myron Haynes, Tommy Rainey, and Mike Carroll.

Mrs. Flournoy was born April 8, 1940 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Royce and Florence Clay Long. She lived in Grantville before making her home in Highlands two years ago, was a Baptist and was the wife of the late Allen Flournoy.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Richard Moncrief of Highlands; one sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Jack Ellsworth of Grantville; her mother-in-law and stepfather-in-law, Miriam and Everette Hendrix of Newnan; and two granddaughters, Brandy Moncrief and Brooke Moncrief, both of Highlands. She was preceded in death by a son, Chris Flournoy.

Funeral services were conducted February 5 at Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan with Reverend Joe Felder officiating. Pallbearers were Shane Crider, D. J. Simons, Jason White, Joey Pyles, Billy Holt and Tony Kelly.

LENA STATHAM GIDDENS

Mrs. Lena Statham Giddens, 86, of Manchester, died February 14 at the home of her daughter in Manchester. Funeral services were held February 16 at Northside Baptist Church. Burial followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens, according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester.

Mrs. Giddens was born October 29, 1913 in Worth County, the daughter of the late Carrie Ethridge Statham and David Statham. She was retired from the former Callaway Mills in Manchester, was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was the widow of Riley Lee Giddens.

Survivors include a son, Kenny Giddens of Woodbury; a daughter, Margaret Thompson of Manchester; a brother, John Statham, also of Manchester; a sister, Maggie Taylor of Poulan; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

MRS. BERTHA MAHONE SULLIVAN
February 18, 1907 - February 13, 2000

Mrs. Bertha Mahone Sullivan, 92, of Atlanta, died February 13. Funeral services were held February 17 at New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend James Carter officiating.

Mrs. Sullivan was born February 18, 1907 in Woodland, daughter of the late Deacon James H. and Fannie B. Mahone. She was the eldest of six children, four of whom preceded her in death. She joined Friendship Baptist Church in Woodland at an early age and later moved to Manchester were she lived until failing health made it necessary to move to Atlanta where she resided until her death. For many years Mrs. Sullivan worked at Bowden’s Cleaners and later worked as an assistant for the dental office of Dr. Wilson, where she worked until retirement age.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Willie Mae Parker of Atlanta, and Mrs. Thelma W. Parker of Lorraine, Ohio; five nephews, Willie R. (Julia) Parker, Donald Parker and Lester Parker, all of Atlanta, Calvin Parker of Lorraine, Ohio, Julius Warrior, III of Manchester; eight nieces, Jesse Mae Thompson, Ernestine B. (Raymond) Smith, Sandra R. (Ron) Cook, and Austine P. (Glen) Giles, all of Atlanta, Willie Mae Warrior of Manchester, Phyllis Marily and Janice Parker, all of Lorraine, Ohio; 11 great-nephews; six great-nieces; five great-great-nephews, and eight great-great-nieces.

Joshua (Junebug) Steed, Jr., 53, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, died February 11 at his home. Funeral services were conducted February 18 at New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend Robert Ellison officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

Mr. Steed was born September 22, 1946 in Manchester, son of the late Josh and Willie Mae Steed. He joined New Hope Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was an employee of Ford Motor Company in Plymouth, Michigan for 29 years.

Survivors include his loving, faithful and devoted wife of 33 years, Mrs. Peggy Steed; five children, Angela (Elliott) Walker of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kelvin (Monica) Steed, also of Ann Arbor, Mytel Steed and Tameka (Effrin) McDonald, all of Ypsilanti, and Pamela Bonds (Antonio) of Florence, Alabama; a godson, Antoine; 15 grandchildre, Brittany, Courtney, Mikhail, Effrin, Jr., Brooklyn, Sharniece, Kelsey, Christian, India, Ashley, Adrianna, Mookie, Josh, Brandon, and Matrivia; two brothers, Watsey (Pam) Steed and Everett (Jessie) Steed, all of Manchester; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Dorothy Woolfolk of Decatur, Riley and Bettye Ann Stanford of College Park, and Georgia and John C. Hough of Manchester; aunts and uncles, Claude and Dorothy Brown of West Virginia and Julia and Sam Williams of Tampa, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and very close friends. He wsa preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Steed and Martha Hough; two brothers, Tommy L. Steed and Willie (Pete) Steed; grandchildren, Kameron and Ebony.

Mrs. Verlean R. Eggleton, 71, of Manchester, died February 21, at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held February 22 at Trinity Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmie Chapman officiating and deacons of Trinity Baptist Church serving as pallbearers. Interment was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Eggleton was born October 21, 1928 in Marion County, the daughter of the late William Edward and Pinkie Lee Raybon. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Aubrey Eggleton of Manchester; one sister, Margie Eggleton of Valley, Alabama; two half-sisters, Ruth Hogg of Montevallo, Alabama and Alma Burdett of Douglasville; several nieces and nephews.
