CPL. MICHAEL WADE BROACH
July 28, 1970 - January 25, 2002

Cpl. Michael Wade Broach, 31, of Woodland, died January 25 in Columbus. Funeral services were held January 27 at the Old Shiloh Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery with Police Honor Guard services, according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester.

Cpl. Broach was born July 28, 1970 in Columbus, the son of Thomas and Martha Broach. He was a Corporal with the Greenville City Police Department and had served as a former Deputy with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department and former 911 dispatcher with both Meriwether County and Columbus. He was a member of the Georgia Peace Officers Association and a volunteer fireman with the Shiloh Fire Department.

Survivors, other than his parents, include a brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Delaine Broach; sister and brother-in-law, Dannielle and David Coffield; a niece, Ashton Broach; a special longtime devoted friend, John Fine, all of Woodland.

Contributions in memory of Cpl. Broach may be made to the Georgia Peace Officers Association.

ROGER JEWELL SMITH
February 25, 1952 - January 25, 2002

Roger Smith, 49, of Macon, passed away January 25 in Milledgeville. Funeral services were held January 30 at Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Cherry Street in Macon. Burial followed at Macon Memorial Park. Rev. Andy Oxford and Rev. Julian Whatley officiated.

Mr. Smith was born in Fort Valley and had lived in the Middle Georgia area all of his life. He was a member of the National Guard and a member of First Baptist Church in Reynolds. He was network administrator of B.S.G., formerly Macon Beauty, for the past three years. For some thirty years, he was an appliance repairman with R. J. Appliance, Middle Georgia Appliance and Morris Appliance. Mr. Smith was Worship Master at Reynolds Masonic Lodge No. 695.

Survivors include his wife, Carol M. Smith, Macon; his children, Kristi (Todd) Beasley, Jones County; Rusty Smith, Reynolds; Amber (John) Newbern, Warner Robins, and Julie Rowland, Macon; a grandson, Gage Price, Macon; his parents, Jewell S. and Floy M. Smith, Reynolds; three brothers, Anthony Smith, Hawthorne, Florida, Richard Smith, Forsyth, and David Smith, Greenville; one sister, Brenda Smith of Fort Valley; several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that anyone desiring to honor Mr. Smith’s memory may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 2065, Macon, GA 31203 or to the American Diabetes Association, Suite C 236, 5105 Paulsen Street, Savannah, GA 31405.

ROBERT F. WISE
September 8, 1924 - January 30, 2002

Robert Franklin "Buck" Wise, 77, of Manchester, died January 30 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held February 2nd from the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmie Chapman officiating, assisted by C.R. Hicks.

Burial followed at the Manchester City Cemetery with Sid Wigley, Leonard Wigley, Robert Wigley, Andy Beck, Tim McCard and Tony Rodriquez serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Wise was born September 8, 1924 in Meriwether County, a son of the late James Adam Wise and the late Isabelle Bowie Wise. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mr. Wise was retired from the new car department of Meadows Motors and had also served there as a security guard.

Survivors also include his stepmother, Alberta Wise of Jacksonville, Florida; his wife, Catherine Carlisle Wise of Manchester; one son, William Franklin Wise of Chesapeake, Virginia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Agnes and Bobby Bonner of Sevierville, Tennessee and Wanda and Danny Calhoun of Shiloh; two sisters, Evelyn Wigley of Manchester and Dorothy Cain of Jacksonville, Florida; and five grandchildren.

October 8, 1905 - February 1, 2002

Mrs. Annie Jean Chapman, 96, of Manchester, died February 1st at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held February 3rd from Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery in Shiloh with the Rev. Charles Qualls officiating.

Mrs. Chapman was born October 8, 1905 in Harris County, a daughter of the late Edger Limuel Koon and the late Mary Clara Murrah Koon. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church. Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Owen Chapman; two daughters, Georgia Belle Burgess and Claire Spence; and a son, Glenn Chapman.

Survivors include two daughters, Billie Mauldin and Betty Boynton, both of Manchester; two sons, Gene Chapman of Arcadia, Florida and Grant Chapman of Manchester; two sisters, Ida Phillips of Warm Springs and Arrie Thompson of LaGrange; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dorothy West Phillips, 75, of Manchester, formerly of Fayetteville, died February 7 at her home. Funeral services were held February 9 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel, Manchester with the Red. Red Roberson of the Cove Baptist Church officiating with interment in Meriwether Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were Bill Bonner, Greg Hobbs, Happy Montgomery, Scott Elliott, Emmitt Collins, and Bill Caldwell.

Mrs. Phillips was born May 15, 1926 in DeKalb County, the daughter of William Wylie and Bessie Ethel West. She was a homemaker and a member of the Cove Baptist Church. She was the widow of Dan Phillips.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Margaret Phillips of Manchester; three sisters, Jean Turner of Fayetteville, Joyce Crowe of McMinnville, Tennessee and Pauline McDonald of Union City; a brother, Dan West of Fayetteville; two grandsons, Jimmy (Susan) Phillips of Winston and Mark Phillips of Manchester; three great-grandchildren, Beth Phillips, Jamie Phillips, and Jeffrey Phillips, all of Winston.

RONNIE CHARLES PHILLIPS
April 8, 1974 - February 5, 2002

Ronnie Charles Phillips, 27, of Blairsville, died February 5 at North Georgia Medical Center in Ellijay. Funeral services were held February 8 at West End Baptist Church with Father Robert Wills officiating, assisted by Rev. Bill West. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers were Mike Johnson, Clint Evans, Chad Shirey, Phillip McGraw, Tory Garrett, and Chuck Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was born April 8, 1974 in Meriwether County, son of Ronnie Oscar Phillips and Penny Deloris Bowen Phillips. He was a survey technician with Georgia Department of Transportation and was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Survivors include his parents, Oscar and Penny Phillips of Warm Springs; wife, Lori Luhning Phillips of Blairsville; son, Colton Phillips, also of Blairsville; maternal grandmother, Frances Phillips of Manchester; several aunts, uncles and cousins; mother-in-law, Dot Luhning of Manchester.

MRS. INELL JENKINS

Mrs. Inell Jenkins, 80, of Warm Springs, passed away February 1 at her home. Funeral services were held February 6 at Leverette Hill Baptist Church in Warm Springs with Rev. Tracy Neal officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jenkins was born October 11, 1923 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Ms. Lizzie Terrell and Mr. Tasey Terrell. She joined the William Chapel Methodist Church at an early age an early age and later moved her membership to the Leverette Hill Baptist Church. In 1941 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Oscar Jenkins, Sr.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Nora (late Alonzo Harris), Mrs. Georgia (late Mr. Horace Minnifield), Mrs. Inez (Mr. Tommy Carter), Mrs. Lizzie (Mr. Charlie Revell); three sons, Joe (late Ms. Mattie Cil Jenkins), Hubbard Jenkins, and Charles Jenkins, all of Warm Springs; one brother, L.C. Bray of Manchester; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Susie Jenkins of Talbotton; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends.

MRS. MARY JIM SHIREY
July 7, 1916 - February 10, 2002

Mrs. Mary Jim Shirey, 86, of Manchester, passed away February 10 at Georgia Baptist Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at Cox Funeral Home Chapel February 11 with Rev. C.R. Hicks officiating.

Pallbearers were Chuck Chapman, Donald Jaworski, Jr., Richard Shirey, Robert Shirey, Chad Shirey, and Cliff Baker.

Mrs. Shirey was born July 7, 1916 in Troup County, daughter of the late Mattie Cook Lucas and the late John Robert Lucas. She was a member of Old Shiloh Baptist Church and was a retired weaver with Thomaston Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Virgil Shirey, a daughter, Mary Jaworski and a son, Billy Shirey.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty White of Thomaston; three sons, Robert (Peggy) Shirey of Manchester, Richard (Judy) Shirey of LaGrange, and John (Cheryl) Shirey of Manchester; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dora Lee Dunn, 80, of Warm Springs, died February 7, at St. Frances Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services were held February 9 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Pine Mountain Valley, with Rev. Joel Chapman officiating, assisted by Rev. Jim Hickman and Rev. Wallace Cody. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Billy Joe Dunn, Joey Dunn, Harvey Moncrief, Jerry Moncrief, Leonard Moncrief, Frankie Dennis, Rickey Satterfield and Mike Satterfield serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Dunn was born July 15, 1921 in Holmes County, Florida, daughter of Dillard A. Ard and Mary Eleanor Scott Ard. She was retired from the Nursing Services and Physical Therapy Department of the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and was a member of the Warm Springs United Methodist Church.

Survivors included her husband, Marion R. Dunn, Jr., of Warm Springs; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lee and William B. Weeks, Sr., of Hollywood, Maryland, and Lucy and Connie Mills of Warm Springs; two sons and daughter-in-law, Marion Rufus Dunn III and Nancy Dunn of Warm Springs, and Forrest Samuel Dunn of Shiloh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Billy Garrison of Warm Springs, and Sarah and James Webb of Columbus; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Fredrick N. and Phillis Ard of Denver, Colorado, Daniel W. and Lillie Ard of Fayetteville, and Dilliard A. Jr., and Linda Ard of Lynn Haven, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

SIDNEY EUGENE AKIN
October 10, 1931 - February 5, 2002

Sidney Eugene Akin, (USAF Ret.) 70, of Perry, died February 5 at his residence. Graveside services with full military honors were held February 8 from the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

Mr. Akin was born October 10, 1931 in Geneva, Talbot County, a son of the late Herman S. Akin and Marian Story Akin. He was a 1948 graduate of Talbot County High School. He retired first as a Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years service in the US Air Force, having served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, working much of that time as a cryptologist. He later retired after 20 years services with the Southern Railway, being the fourth generation of his family to work for the railroad. He was a member of the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hartley Akin of Perry; two daughters, Joyce Sparks of Ashville, NC, and Dianne LaBorde of Macon; two sons, David Akin of Macon, and Steve Akin of Statesboro; two brothers, Herman Akin, Jr. Of Columbus, and Bob Akin of Roswell; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Radford, Lewis and Ed.

Mrs. Patty Hendricks Buice, 40, of Barnesville, passed away February 14 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted February 16 at the Church of the Nazarene in Barnesville with the Rev. Joe Hendricks and the Rev. Robbie Kerr officiating. Interments was at Lamar Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Buice was born in Meriwether County, daughter of James and Rose Hendricks of Woodland, She had resided in Barnesville for a number of years, was a member of the Pineview Baptist Church in Barnesville and was proud to be the Olympic Torch bearer in 1996. She was employed as a pre-k teacher and taught for the Upson County School System for 12 years.

Survivors, other than her parents, include her husband, Mitchell Buice of Barnesville; one stepson, Cody Buice, also of Barnesville; grandmother, Mrs. William Buckner of Thomaston; two sisters, Mrs. Molly (Jack) Hood of Thomaston and Mrs. Jennie (Kevin) Mullis of McDonough; two nieces, Lauren Mullis of McDonough and Allie Hood of Thomaston.

MISS JAMIE ANN BURHENN
November 15, 1979 - February 14, 2002

Miss Jamie Ann Burhenn, 22, of Dixon, Illinois, died February 14, at Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon. Funeral services were held February 18 at Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church in Dixon with the Rev. Richard Reigle officiating. Burial was at Ashton Cemetery.

Miss Burhenn was born November 15, 1979 in Dixon, the daughter of Steven and April (Hieronimus) Burhenn. She was employed through the Borg Warner Company as a laborer.

Survivors include her father, Steven Burhenn of Sacramento, California; her mother, April (Ben) Fichter of Ashton, Illinois; maternal grandparents, Shirley Webb of Ashton, Hillert Hieronimus of Manchester; paternal grandparents, Bob (Shirley) Burhenn of Rochelle, Illinois, and Sharon (Robert) Fichter of Dixon.

MRS. FRANCES CALLAHAN BELK
September 26, 1904 - February 15, 2002

Mrs. Frances Callahan Belk, 98, died February 15 at St. Francis Hospital. A memorial service was held February 17 at the St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus. The service was led by the Rev. Helen Berenthien, Dr. Hal Brady and Dr. Gilbert Ramsay. Burial was at Woodbury City Cemetery in Woodbury.

Mrs. Belk was born September 26, 1904 in Yatesville, the daughter of Rosebud Dixon and Oscar Leon Callahan. Her father was the Superintendent of Meriwether County Schools and she was the descendent of John Lydall Dixon, founder of the town of Woodbury, and the Rev. James Rush, the founder of the town of Whitesville. She was the widow of Franklin Paul Belk.

"Miss Frances" as she was called by many, was a teacher at Manchester High School, Tifton High School, Columbus High School, and Bibb Elementary School. She did volunteer work at the St. Luke United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Gleaners Class and Circle 6. Mrs. Belk was one of the oldest members of the church, having been a member since 1930. While in her nineties, Mrs. Belk was bestowed the honor of being named one of the Quiet Disciples of St. Luke. She was a charter member of the Oglethorpe DAR, as well as the oldest member, was a charter member of the Magna Carta Dames, and she was very active as a member of the Genealogical Society of Columbus. Mrs. Belk also did volunteer work at the Stewart Community Home, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and the nursing homes of Oak and Pine Manor.

Survivors include three sons, Franklin Paul Belk, Jr. (Peggy) of Dalton, Leon Pierce Belk (Marsha) of Columbus and Hon. James Dixon Belk (Beverly), also of Dalton; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Belk may be made to the Genealogical Section of the W.C. Bradley Memorial Library or the St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Harry Boyette Short, 63, of Manchester, died February 16 at his residence. Funeral services were held February 18 from Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Cullen Clements officiating, assisted by Rev. Jimmie Chapman. Interment followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Scott Stiner, Keith Cato, Jay Eldridge, Mike O’Brien, Jeff Short, and Scott Englebert serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Short was born January 2, 1939 in Taylor County, a son of Clarence Short and Grace Howard Short. He worked for Southern Natural Gas and was a veteran of the US Army Reserve. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Manchester.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellis Short of Manchester; two sons, Daryl Short of Woodland and Derek Short of Hogansville; four brothers, Johnny Short of Albany, Larry Short of Ackworth, Mickey Short of Luthersville, Maryland and A.C. Beall of Columbus; one sister, Jackie O’Brien of Columbus; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Brenda K. May, 49, of Senoia, died February 16 at Newnan Hospital. Funeral services were held February 19 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester with the Rev. Bruce Brown of Grace Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were Curtis Davis, Max Moody, Dennis Morgan, Ricky Crawford, Paul Bass, Jr., David Bryan and Larry Wooten.

Mrs. May was born August 17, 1952 in Corpus Christi, TX, the daughter of Joseph W. and Margaret Mann Moody. She was a homemaker and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include her husband, Lemual (Buck) May of Senoia; two sons, Brent (Amy) May of Nashville, Tennessee and Brian May of Senoia; two brothers, Ralph E. Moody and Charles Max Moody, both of Jonesboro; two grandsons, Brannon May and Bryan Lynch, both of Nashville, Tennessee.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shelia Pam Martin-Kelly, 41, of Warm Springs, will be held Friday, February 22 at 1:00 PM from the Leverette Hill Baptist Church of Warm Springs and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor T.W. Neal will officiate.

Mrs. Martin-Kelly died Friday, February 15 at her residence. She was the daughter of Mrs. Lila Guice Martin and the late Mr. Maxie Martin. She was a graduate of Manchester High School, employed by the Roosevelt Institute in Warm Springs and was a member of the Leverette Hill Baptist Church where she served on the Usher’s Board.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Lila Martin of Warm Springs; four sisters, Mattie (Roger) Steed of Decatur, Ann LeFlore of Phenix City, Alabama, Mary Ann Martin of Warm Springs, Jill Buchanna of Ft. MRS. DORA STEWART PORTWOOD
August 29, 1906 - February 24, 2002

Mrs. Dora Stewart Portwood, 95, of Manchester, passed away February 24 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held February 26 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with the Rev. John Simmons Officiating. Burial was at the Carroll Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Portwood was born August 29, 1906 in Carroll County, daughter of the late James Franklin Stewart and the late Alvada Pyron Stewart. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Warm Springs.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Hollstrom of Manchester; a son, Donald Portwood of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. A.S. Portwood and sons, Stewart Portwood and Anderson Shay Portwood, Jr.

Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home of Manchester was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. ROSA LEE GLANTON
August 27, 1903 - February 23, 2002

Mrs. Rosa Lee Glanton, 98, of Manchester, passed away February 23 at Warm Springs Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted at Smith-Steele-Meadows Nursing Home Chapel February 25 with the Rev. Richard Campbell officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bruce Banten. Burial followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Larry White, Barry Stewart, Gary Stewart, Jamie Willingham, Joel Faulkner and Kim Sanders serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Glanton was born August 27, 1903 in Fulton County, daughter of the late John Knox Faulkner, and the late Agnes Lee White Faulkner. She was retired from the Callaway Mills Co. Cloth Room as a bookkeeper, and was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Sanders and Betty White, both of Manchester, and Mary (Bobby) White of Chattanooga, Tennessee; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce L. Glanton.
