Lewis Clifton Spence, Sr., 98, of Manchester, died May 31 at Warm Springs Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral services were held June 2 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with the Reverend Jimmie Chapman officiating, assisted by the Reverend Eugene Wiseman and the Reverend Marvin Cochran. Burial followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were Victor Nickel, David Harper, Mark Harper, Ricky Smoot, Joe Willard, and Marvin Cochran. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Tommy Harper, Dennis Spence, Dr. H. M. Hendricks, Sr., Billy Meadows, Jimmy Lanier, Jason Spence, Dr. J. W. Smith, and Joe Massengale.
Mr. Spence was born February 24, 1904 in Carroll County, son of the late James Walter and Emma Lambert Spence. He was retired as a supervisor of textiles (twister Room) and security guard for Goody Products. He was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Beatrice Smoot of Woodbury, and Sara Harper and Mary Nickel, both of Manchester; two sons, J. W. Spence of Carrollton, and Harry Spence of Harris City; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora and a son, Red.

Mrs. Verna B. Carlisle, 97, of Manchester, passed away May 30 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held June 1 at the Manchester City Cemetery with Reverend Craig Williamson, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
Mrs. Carlisle was born September 8, 1904 in Chelsea, Alabama, the daughter of the late Emma Holcomb Blackerby and the late Charles William Blackerby. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Manchester, and the widow of James Olin Carlisle.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Jackson of Manchester, Carol (Ramon) Collier of Augusta and Beth Greer of Newnan; two sisters, Grace B. Lowery of Birmingham, Alabama and Orpha B. Smith of Wilsonville, Alabama; five grandchildren, Gayle (Les) Dean of Columbus, Kathleen (Steve) Burgess of Nashville, Tennessee, Jennifer (Thomas) Sumner of Augusta, William (Jan ) Collier of Decatur, Vivian Maddux of Cullman, Alabama; 11 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Preston Douglas "Doug" Barlow, 54, of Greenville, died May 24 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services were held May 27 from Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury with Reverend Jimmy Bowden officiating. Burial was in the Barlow family cemetery in Greenville. Serving as pallbearers were Andy Whatley, John Crawford, Ronnie Faulkner, Jack Faulkner, Lee Raney, Stan Jones, Clayton Plemmons, and Marion Connell.
Mr. Barlow was born February 23, 1948, in Jacksonville, Florida, a son of Preston R. and Margaret Milligan Barlow. He graduated from Paxton High School in Jacksonville in 1965 and served nine years in the US Army, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury where he was the choir leader and song director. He worked at Mead Southern Wood Products in Greenville for 25 years as a heavy equipment operator. After being employed at Mead and his first battle with cancer he became the Business Manager of the Laborers Local Union 1073. He was also a trustee member of the Laborers District Council of Georgia and South Carolina.
Survivors include his parents, Preston R. and Margaret M. Barlow of Satsuma, Florida; his wife, Karin K. Barlow of Greenville; daughter Erika Purgason and son-in-law, Jamie Purgason of Greenville; sister, LuAnn Kimball of Manchester, grandson, Jacob Stone of Greenville; several nieces and nephews.

Roy Dallas Parrott, 77, of Manchester, died May 20 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Graveside services were held at City Cemetery May 23 with Isham Wright officiating.
Mr. Parrott was born December 10, 1924 in Meriwether County, son of the late Murray and Sallie Chapman Parrott. He was a carpenter at Milliken & Company for 40+ years and retired from the Maintenance Department with Goody Products. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during World War II and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Scott Parrott of Shiloh; two daughters, Margaret Wright of LaGrange, and Anita Funderburk of Shiloh; six sisters, LeDonia Windham of Macon, Mayo McDonald, Eva Mae Koon and Zannie Bennett, all of Shiloh; Eloise Sherrer and Shirley Parrott, both of Manchester; two brothers, Bryon Parrott of Macon and James Parrott of Manchester; three grandchildren, Alisia Wright Garrett (Jimmy), Brian Wright (Suzanne), all of LaGrange, and David Stephens (Rhonda) of Manchester; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Preston Parrot.

Benjamin F. Sherriff, 79, of Manchester passed away May 23rd at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held at Memory Gardens Cemetery on May 25 with Reverend Herschel Phillips officiating.
Mr. Sherriff was born October 20, 1922 in Dawsonville, son of the late William Henry and Sarah Louise Sherriff. He had lived most of his life in the Atlanta area and upon retiring in March 2000, moved to Manchester. He was the owner of R & D Auto Sales in Atlanta since 1984, served in the Army during World War II, and was later employed as an Atlanta police officer.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Johnson of Talbotton; a son, Michael Sherriff; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lilie Chunn "Bill" Evans, 95, of Woodbury, passed away June 7 at Molena Nursing Home. Funeral services were held June 9 at Jones Chapel Congregational Christian Church in Woodbury with Reverend Wade Washburn officiating, assisted by Reverend James Schwarzlose. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Ralph C. Johnson Jr., Robert D. Tolbert, Homer Eugene Lee, Ralph Portwood, Michael Dollar, and Loyd Thomas serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Terrell Brown, Huel Brown, Bill Brown, Charles Lovvorn, John Kierbow, and Alfred Mosley.
Mrs. Evans was born December 6, 1906 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Edward Amos Chunn and the late Mattie Lou Gill Chunn. She was a homemaker and a member of Jones Chapel Congreatational Christian Church. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Hardman of Mableton and Satira Johnson of Woodbury; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Evans and two grandsons.

Willie Kirkland "Kirk" Lanier, 61, of Warm Springs, died June 10 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Hope Baptist Church Wednesday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Michael Lott officiating. Burial will be at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Mr. Lanier was born July 21, 1940, in Meriwether County, son of the late J. E. Lanier and the late Mammie Bowen Lanier. He was a railroad engineer for CSX Railroad and a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Fuller Lanier of Warm Springs; five daughters, Denise Walker of Waycross, Charlotte Lanier of Woodbury, Shannon Mitchell of Manchester, Tabitha Gordy of Woodbury, and Emily Lanier of Warm Springs; one son, Darron Lanier of Waycross; one sister, Mary Arnold of Manchester; one brother, Dennis Lanier of Warm Springs; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Bedell was born November 13, 1963, son of Willie and Marie Bedell. He joined Flint River Baptist Church at an early age and remained faithful until his death.

Andrew "Andy" C. Bulloch, 72, of Farmers Branch, Texas, passed away June 8 in Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be conducted June 12 at Dalton and Son Funeral Home in Lewisville, Texas with the burial at Hilltop Memorial Park in Carrollton, Texas.
Mr. Bulloch was born November 23, 1929 in Omega to the late Boykin Hood and Birdie Jewel Bulloch. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1946, attended Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas and Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1946 - 1949, worked at The Woodman Company in Decatur, Meads Bakery in Lubbock, Texas, Morton Foods in Dallas, Texas, and retired from Zoecon in Dallas in 1987. He also helped develop Bulloch Fabricating, Inc. in Lewisville, Texas after retirement.

Brother John Lewis Adams, the son of the late John L. and Annie L. Adams, was born June 9, 1918 in Talbot County. He departed this life on June 7, 2002.
He joined Concord Baptist Church at an early age and remained faithful to his Heavenly Father until death. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Sis. Lucy Agnes Adams on October 2, 1929 and to this union two children were born. His daughter, Annette Adams preceded him in death.
John leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted son, John Lamar Adams of Manchester; four grandchildren, Patricia King (Jimmy), Clifford Adams and Lakesha Adams of Manchester, and Antonio Adams of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; six great grandchildren, Kelevin Steverson of Oglethorpe, Fernando R. Steverson of Washington, DC, Alexia E. Mrs. Eva M. Martin, 75, passed away June 6 at Georgia Baptist Warm Springs Nursing Home. Funeral services were held June 15 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Manchester with Rev. J. D. Walker, pastor, officiating.
Mrs. Martin was born May 9, 1927 in Sandersville, daughter of the late Lewis and Catherine Johnson. She joined Union Hill Baptist Church of Washington County at an early age and served faithfully as a choir leader and in many other capacities for church improvement. She was self-employed and did beautiful catering and domestic work. In 1952 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Willie C. Martin who preceded her in death. From this union one son was born who also preceded her in death. She and her husband spent most of their adult life in Miami, Florida. She returned to Georgia in 1994 and became an active member of New Hope Baptist Church before entering the nursing home.
Survivors include two sisters, Laura J. (Andrew) Spivey of Manchester and Hattie J. Thomas of Los Angeles, California; one brother, William Henry (Mary) Johnson of Brooksville, Florida; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Norris and Annie Martin of Dublin, Avis Coleman and Oletha Cordy of Wrightsville; one brother-in-law, Albert (Javolyn) Martin, Jr., of Dublin; one granddaughter, Moniquea Martin of Griffin; three great grandchildren, 16 nephews and nieces; a special caretaker, Pamela Steed; and a host of relatives and friends.

Lewis Eugene "Tony" Anthony, 81, of Columbus, formerly of Shiloh, died June 14 at the Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services were held June 17 at Manchester First United Methodist Church with Reverend Bruce Bunten and Reverend Charles Fletcher officiating. Interment was in Parkhill Cemetery, according to Cox Funeral Home of Manchester.
Pallbearers were Harry Barnes, Robert Kellum, Jack Buchanan, Mike Johnson, Fred Goolsby, and Charles Boswell. Honorary pallbearers were Christian Workers Sunday School Class and members of the Methodist Mens Choir.
Mr. Anthony was born February 12, 1921 in Columbus, the son of Lewis Chester Anthony and Florence Clark Anthony. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy after 20 years, having served during World War II and Korea. He had also worked as an inspector for the Florida Department of Public Health. Mr. Anthony was a member of Manchester First United Methodist Church where he served on its Administrative Board and was a Sunday School teacher.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth "Tess" Anthony and is survived by his wife, Maudie B. Anthony of Columbus; two sons, Richard (Sandy) Anthony of Wilmington, NC and Thomas (Mollie) Anthony of The Woodlands, TX; a sister, Elizabeth (Jim) Warrick of Columbus; two brothers, Richard W. (Desma) Anthony of Opelika, AL and Rodney (Rosalyn) Anthony of Pine Mountain; a stepdaughter, Sandra (David) Douglas of Columbus; a stepson, Fred Brown of Columbus; five grandchildren, Chad (Jill) Anthony of Kansas City, MO, Brad Anthony of Wilmington, NC, Angela Anthony of The Woodlands, TX, and Melissa Anthony of California; four step grandchildren, Maggie (Michael) Laton of Fayetteville, Katie Brown, Amy Douglas and Adam Douglas, all of Columbus; two great grandchildren.

Mr. Hurley was retired after 38 years as manager of the kitchen and dining room at Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation Institute in Warm Springs. He was a deacon in the Church of Christ in Manchester, and was a veteran of the US Army.
Survivors include his wife, Stella; one son, Bobby Hurley; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren, all of Glendale, Kentucky.
Donation may be made to Alzheimers Foundation in honor of Mr. Hurley.

Dr. Thomas Lee Porter, 69, of Manchester and College Park, died June 18 at his home in College Park. Funeral services were held June 23 at Manchester First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Malcolm Cole Davis officiating. Pallbearers were Luke Gill, Jeff Porter, Joel Porter, Chris Hardy, Russell Hardy, Josh Porter and Russell Porter. Burial was in Manchester City Cemetery.
Dr. Porter was born May 22, 1933 in Big Spring, Texas, the son of the late Bernice Johnson Porter and Athal Ashley Porter. He was Program Director for Talbott Recovery Campus, Atlanta. Dr. Porter earned his Masters Degree from Texas Tech University and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He was a former professor at Memphis State and Auburn University and was also the former Chairman of Counseling and Human Resources at the University of Georgia. He served on the United States Presidential Advisory Board for Rehabilitation and Special Education and was a nationally recognized figure in the rehabilitation field. Dr. Porter was a US Army veteran and was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Bay Russell Porter of Manchester; three sons, Jeff Porter of Owens Crossroads, Alabama; Russell Thomas Porter off Athens and Joel Stewart Porter of Hamilton, New Zealand; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Porter of Mt. Shasta, California; a sister, Lynn Calvert of Victoria, Texas; four grandchildren, Joshua, Lindsey, Amber and Abigail Porter; two nephews, Chris and Russell Hardy and a niece, Ashley Villareal.

Elder Charlie F. York, Jr., 85, of Thomaston, died June 20 at his home. Funeral services were held June 22 at Pasley-Fletcher Chapel with Elder Edward McIntyre and Elder W. H. Durrence officiating. Burial was at South View Cemetery in Thomaston.
Elder York was born August 25, 1916 in Meriwether County, son of the late Charlie F. York and the late Eva Alma Wyche York. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Air Force. He retired from the State Department of Transportation, was a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church and served the following churches: Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church at Zebulon; Ramah Primitive Baptist Church in Buena Vista; Chickasawhatchee Primative Church at Dawson; Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church at Sasser; and Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church at Woodland. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Annabelle S. York in 1983 and by his second wife, Mrs. Janie Carr York in 2002.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Sandra Y. Salter of Thomaston; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Berard of Woodland; two stepsons, Jimmy Carr of Greenville and Earl Carr of Lexington, North Carolina; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Peek and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, both of Thomaston; one grandson, Chris Bennett of St. Augustine, Florida; 11 step-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren.

MRS. RUTH MARIE HESS SCHAEFER

Graveside services were held at Southside Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery for Mrs. Ruth Marie Hess Schaefer, 82, Altoona, who died June 19. The Reverend Gary Heathcock officiated with Southside Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Born July 23, 1919 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Schaefer was the daughter of the late Edwin Wesley and Bessie Rhiner Hess, and the widow of the late Walter S. Schaefer, Sr., She had resided in Etowah County for more than 50 years and was a member of Bellevue United Methodist Church. She had formerly attended First United Methodist Church in Manchester. She was a member of the Womens Club for more than 50 years and the Antiquarium DAR and Bellevue Methodist Church Bible Club for many years. She was also a member of the Edenwood Garden Club.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Walter S. Schaefer, Jr., and Dorinda of Altoona; daughter, Barbara Jane Schaefer of Shiloh; two granddaughters, Lauren Bess Schaefer and Katie Elizabeth Schaefer.

Mrs. Hazel Thomas, 78, of Woodbury, died June 23 at Harriman Hospital in Harriman, Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted June 26 at 4:00 p.m. at First Assembly of God in Manchester with the Reverend Cary Hicks officiating. Burial will be at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Thomas was born July 12, 1923 in Butts County, daughter of the late James Bartlett Fuller and the late Mirelda Coe Fuller. She was a retired textile (weaver) worker and a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Bishop of Woodbury; one son, Billy Thomas of Manchester; 13 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Thomas; a son, Herman Thomas; and grandsons, Randy Thomas and Jamie Thomas.

Mrs. Helen Jane Williams, 56, of Warm Springs, died June 22 at her residence. Graveside services were conducted June 25 at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Durand with the Reverends Cary Hicks and Ed White officiating.
Pallbearers were Kenneth James, Scotty James, Dean Mounts, Kimball Mounts and Brad Barnes.
Mrs. Williams was born July 21, 1946 in Knoxville, Tennessee, daughter of the late Thomas L. Waggoner and the late Evelyn J. Underwood Waggoner. She was the retired owner/operator of Janes Country Store in Pine Mountain Valley.
Survivors include her husband, James David Williams of Warm Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, Forrest Charles Blankenship and Shelby Blankenship, both of Pine Mountain Valley; two stepdaughters, Sandy Yvone Mayfield of Warm Springs and Tammy Elaine Green of Pine Mountain Valley; three grandchildren, Chaise Blankenship, Regan Blankenship and Daniel Sams, all of Pine Mountain Valley; four sisters; one stepbrother; three step-grandchildren; one step-great grandchild.
