HUGH FREDRICK WILSON
March 21, 1918 - December 18, 1999

Hugh Fredrick Wilson, 81, of Manchester, passed away Saturday, December 18, 1999 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Funeral services were held in the Smith-Steele Meadows Funeral Home Chapel Monday, December 20, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jimmie Chapman officiating and Reverend David Henthorn assisting. Interment followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens.

Mr. Wilson was born on March 21, 1918, the son of the late Charles Tefton Wilson and Mary VanDusan. He was retired from Monroe Linen Service.

Mr. Wilson was a disabled veteran and served in the US Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy Invasion. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Clara Foster Wilson of Manchester; one son and a daughter-in-law, Charles and Salvening Wilson of Buford.

LUCIE STRICKLAND HUTCHINSON
May 12, 1913 - December 30, 1999

Mrs. Lucie (Miss Lucie) Strickland Hutchinson, 86, of Pine Mountain passed away Thursday, December 30, 1999 at West Georgia Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 2, 1999 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Pine Mountain with the Reverend Wayne Hollaway and Reverend Marcus Hicks officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Mountain Cemetery.

Mrs. Hutchinson was born May 12, 1913 in Meriwether County, the daughter of the late Mr. James Vincent, Sr., and Appie Lou Sey Wright. She lived in the Stovall Community all her life. She was a faithful mother, wife and homemaker.

Mrs. Hutchinson was a graduate of Greenville High School and was a member of First Baptist Church in Pine Mountain.

Mrs. Hutchinson is survived by one daughter, Tommie Lou Stickland of Roswell; one son and daughter-in-law James S. and Sue Strickland of Pine Mountain; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hutchinson was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas P. Stickland, Sr., and William F. Hutchinson.

Contributions in the memory of Mrs. Hutchinson may be made to the American Heart Association.

Christopher Leonard Moore, 39, of Thomaston, passed away on Friday, December 31, 1999 at his residence.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at 2 p.m. in Southview Cemetery in Thomaston with the Reverend James Coogler officiating.

Mr. Moore was born January 11, 1960 the son of Mr. Sonny Moore of Thomaston and Mrs. Kathryn Eggleton of Woodbury. He was a construction worker by trade.

Mr. Moore is survived by one son, Mr. Scotty Moore of Thomaston; his father, Mr. Sonny Moore of Thomaston; his mother, Mrs. Kathryn Eggleton of Woodbury; his step-mother Mrs. Linda Moore of Thomaston; a sister, Karen Garrett of Thomaston; a half-sister, Kathy Puckett of Woodbury; and a half-brother, Mr. Kevin Moore of Thomaston.

MR. BYRON SHORT
July 29, 1921 - January 2, 2000

Mr. Byron Short, 79, of Manchester passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2000 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at Coggins Funeral Home Chapel in Thomaston with Reverend L. R. Brock officiating. Burial followed in Southview Cemetery in Thomaston.

Mr. Short was a native of Mauk, but lived most of his life in Manchester. He was a restaurant manager.

He is survived by his brother, Mr. Sam B. Short of Thomaston and sister, Mrs. Ophelia Googe. Mr. Short also had several nieces and nephews.

DEBRA J. ANDERSON

Debra J. Anderson of Dothan, Alabama died December 31, 1999. Funeral services were held 12 noon Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at the Church of Dothan in Dothan, Alabama, according to Anderson & Marshall Funeral Home, Inc., Manchester. Varner Memorial Funeral Home, 210 Montana Street in Dothan, Alabama was in charge of the arrangements.

Anderson was the first born of the late Annie Jean and Jonah Anderson. She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age at the New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. After moving to Dothan, she became a member of the Church of Dothan. She served faithfully as a youth advisor as well as a member of the hospitality, finance and building fund communities.

Anderson attended Dothan High School and George C. Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama. She continued her education at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. She was resourceful, energetic, compassionate and ready to share her knowledge with family, members of the church congregation and friends. Anderson was a young woman who strove to bring joy, love, happiness and laughter to all those who loved and knew her best.

She leaves to walk in the light of God’s abiding love; two devoted daughters, Kimyara Anderson of Montgomery, AL and Paige Millender of Headland, AL; a caring son, Kamarian Millender of Headland, AL; a loving mother and father, Annie Jean Anderson and Dothan, AL and Jonah Anderson of Manchester, GA; three sisters, Teresa Anderson (Goliath Davis) of St. Petersburg, FL, Beverly (Mon) Thomas of Irving, TX and Shevesha Anderson of Huntsville, AL; one brother, LaMarrius (Carmen) Anderson of Camp Hill, AL; five nieces, Yonic, Bekira, Jessica, Hiedi and Haley; one nephew, Travis Thomas; grandmother, Addie Garmon of Atlanta, GA; 11 aunts; nine uncles; two great uncles; and a host of cousins and friends.

BERNARD MULLIS

Bernard Mullis, 74, of Manchester died Saturday, January 1, 2000 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.

Funeral services were at Macedonia Baptist Church on Monday, January 3, 2000 at 2 p.m. with Reverend J. C. Templeton officiating and Reverend Francis Gibson assisting. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Deacons of the Macedonia Baptist Church served as pallbearers and his Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Mullis was born December 20, 1925, the son of the late Martin Lemul Mullis and Frankie Mae Garrett. He was a veteran of the US Army and was employed as a truck driver for Playtex Corporation. He was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Collier Mullis, of Manchester; one daughter, Melanie Baker of Macon; two sons, Greg Mullis of Thomaston and Kevin Mullis of McDonough; two sisters, Evelyn Smith of Akin, SC and Shirley Thigpen of Bartow, GA; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Mullis was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Rollins Mullins; two brothers, Lem and John Mullis and his sister, Gladys Keene.

BESSIE MILDRED REYNOLDS MILES

Bessie Mildred Reynolds Miles, 82, of Barnesville passed Friday, January 7, 2000 at her home in Barnesville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 9, 2000 at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home Chapel in Thomaston with Reverend James Grier officiating. Burial followed in Crystal Hill Cemetery in Thomaston.

Mrs. Miles was the daughter of the late James Jefferson Reynolds and Bessie Sistrunk Reynolds. She was a native of Woodbury, but had lived in Thomaston since 1940. Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Miles, in 1974. She was also preceded in death by 12 siblings. She was retired from B. F. Goodrich Martha Mills as a cloth inspector. She was of the Methodist Faith.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. John (Mary Jean) Gilbert of Barnesville; one son, Mr. James Harlen Miles of Thomaston; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

ALBERT WOODROW DUKES

Albert Woodrow Dukes, 75, of Woodbury passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at his residence.

Graveside services were held Thursday, January 6, 2000 at Meriwether Memory Gardens at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jim Dunn officiating and Reverend Stanley Mingledorff and Reverend Bob Prater assisting.

Mr. Dukes was born April 3, 1924, the son of the late Ernest Howard Dukes and Sarah Jewell Bryant.

Mr. Dukes, a veteran of World War II, enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 and served his country in the European theater until 1945.

Mr. Dukes was a textile worker for 20 years, owned and operated a pulpwood business for several years and later became a cattle. He attended Harmony Nazarene Church.

Serving as pallbearers for the funeral were his nephews, David Dukes, and Mark Dukes of Woodbury, Danny Dukes, Donnie Dukes, Derrick Dukes, Benjie Dukes, Larry Cooley and Steve Cooley, all of LaGrange, GA.

Mr. Dukes is survived by his wife, Martha Waddell Dukes; one daughter, Linda (Jim) Creekbaum; two sons, Dickie (Carol) Dukes and Bruce Dukes, all of Woodbury; three brothers, Brady Dukes of Woodbury, Ernest Dukes, Jr. and Thomas Dukes of LaGrange; four sisters, Anne Bryan of Woodbury, Louis Cooley of LaGrange; Earlene Waddell and Martha Lee Yerta both of Woodbury; four grandchildren, Shannon Dukes of Sanford, FL, Brandon Dukes of Athens, GA, and Tina and Trystan Creekbaum of Woodbury.

Wilson "Bud" Fowler, 75, of Greenville died Saturday, January 8, 2000 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Memorial services were held Monday, January 10, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Homes, Inc. in Manchester with Reverend Jonathan Porter officiating.

Mr. Fowler was born May 27, 1924, the son of the late Ed L. Fowler and Lessie Wilson Fowler. He was a brace maker for Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute of Rehabilitation. Mr. Fowler was a veteran of the US Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge and a leather craftsman.

Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Gladys Russell Fowler of Greenville; one daughter, Janie Hay of Pine Mountain; a sister, Annabell Stanfield of Memphis, TN; two grandchildren, Mandy Brown of Springfield and Billy Hart of Greenville; one great grandchild, Kaylee Brown of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Mabel Marian McCurdy, 91, of Warm Springs died Friday, January 7, 2000 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Graveside services were held Monday at 11 a.m. in Meriwether Memory Gardens with Reverend O. B. Perkins officiating and Reverend Gerry Hill assisting. Mrs. McCurdy’s grandsons served as pallbearers.

Mrs. McCurdy was born April 29, 1908 in Marion County, the daughter of the late Nathaniel Favors and Lula Harbuck. She was a homemaker and member of West Main Church of Christ. Mrs. McCurdy was preceded in death by her husband, C. Fred McCurdy, Sr., and a son, C. Fred McCurdy, Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Dianne McCurdy and Carolyn Hendricks, both of Warm Springs; three sons, Carol McCurdy of Warm Springs, Mason McCurdy of Zebulon, and Paul McCurdy of Warm Springs; three sisters, Helen Dorman of Manchester, Miriam Parrott of Warm Springs and Jewell Hurst of Dalton; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

FRANK PAUL MASTRILLI

Frank Paul Mastrilli, 85, of Woodbury died Sunday, January 9, 2000 at Upson Regional Medical Center in Thomaston.

As of press time, no funeral services had been planned.

Mr. Mastrilli was born September 16, 1914 in Homestead, PA, the son of the late Anthony Mastrilli and Frances M. Mastrilli.

Mr. Mastrilli was a barber and retired after cutting hair for more than 50 years in Homestead. He had been a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Homestead for many years. He was currently a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Manchester.

Mr. Mastrilli had been a resident of Georgia for the past 60 years and had lived in Woodbury for the past 11 years.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Helen Hardy Mastrilli; one daughter Johanna Rountree of Woodbury; one son, Frank Theodore Mastrilli of Tuscon, AR; one brother, Henry Mastrilli of Elizabeth, PA; two sisters, Angeline Filbert of Elizabeth, PA and Mary Fisher of West Mifflin, PA. Mr. Mastrilli was preceded in death by a grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.

Robert Eugene Chism, Sr., 67, of Warm Springs died Sunday, January 9, 2000 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.

Memorial services for Mr. Chism were held on Tuesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home in Manchester with Reverend Jeff Marrow of Victory Temple Church of God officiating.

Mr. Chism was born on April 9, 1932 in St. George, GA, the son of Joseph and Eunice Chism. He was a retired teacher in the Vocational Department of the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute of Rehabilitation. Mr. Chism served as a mentor to many students as well as co-workers before he retired.

Mr. Chism received his bachelors degree in psychology from Georgia State University. He was the county Chess Champion and a member of the Lions Club.

Mr. Chism had lived in Warm Springs for the past 35 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Cassandra Chism-Watson of Savannah; two sons, Robert E. Chism, II of Manchester and Thomas Edward Chism of Savannah; a sister Doris Martin of Jekyll Island; and three grandchildren.

Paul Eugene Reynolds, Sr., 66, of Woodbury, died January 16 at Upson Regional Hospital in Thomaston. Funeral services were conducted January 18 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury with Reverend John A. Janes officiating. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Ronnie Faulkner, Chris Reynolds, Mark Owens, Butch DeLoach, Chuck Cato, Bob Cato, J.C. Cook, Keith Cato and Wayne Cato.

Mr. Reynolds was born February 28, 1922 in Pike County, son of the late J. T. and Nannie Vee Davis Reynolds. He was a retired welder for Durand Wayland, Inc. and was a member of Fellowship Church in Thomaston.

Survivors include his wife, Earlene Cato Reynolds of Woodbury; three sons, Randy Reynolds of Thomaston, Gene Reynolds of Senioa, and Mike Reynolds of Molena; two daughters, Jackie Connell of Woodbury, and Beverly Johnson of Thomaston; one sister, Mary Jane Faulkner of Woodbury; one brother, Richard Reynolds of Dawson; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Carrell was born October 3, 1915, in Duval County, FL, daughter of the late George M. and Grace Carlton Arnow. She was a registered nurse.

Survivors include one son, James F. Carrell of Warm Springs; two sisters, Susie Andrews of Jacksonville, FL and Martha Morrison of Phoeniz, AR.

Mr. Moore was born May 30, 1934 in Meriwether County, son of the late Lottie Woods Moore and the late Willie Clinton Moore. He was a self-employed carpenter, was a Baptist and was the widower of Nora Lee Wyatt Moore.

Survivors include one daughter, Christy (Mike) Dowling of Port St. Joe, FL; two sons, Curtis (Angie) Moore of Manchester, and Ricky Moore of Shiloh; two sisters, Verlyn Stephens of Woodbury and Linda Thompson of Winston; five grandsons, Michael Dowling, Curt Moore, Jesse Dowling; B. J. Bedgood and Eric Moore; and a special friend, Shirlene Melton.

Robert Mallory Adkerson, 73, of Manchester died January 16 at his home. Funeral services will be held January 19 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester with Reverend Bruce Brown, pastor of Grace Family Church officiating.

Mr. Adkerson was born January 24, 1936 in Pike County, son of the late Edwin Douglas Adkerson and the late Kate Brown Adkerson. He was the retired office manager for All Weather Tire Co., in Jacksonville, Florida, was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Concord, was a World War II and Korean War Army veteran and was a member of VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife Johnnie Hayes Adkerson of Manchester; one daughter, Marilyn (Glenn) Kufchak of Stockbridge; one son, Vernon Adkerson of Milton, FL; two granddaughters, Monica (Larry) Stiles of Stockbridge and Stephanie (Jason) Bailey, also of Stockbridge; two grandsons, Simon and Skylar Kufchak of Stockbridge; a number of nieces and nephews.
