MRS. LUCILLE DANIEL DAWKINS

June 10, 1915 – June 25, 2002

 

Mrs. Lucille Daniel Dawkins, 87, of Manchester, died June 25 at the Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held June 27 at  the Blue Water Baptist Church in Dublin with the Reverend W. H. Fancer of the Bible Baptist Church in Manchester officiating.

 

Mrs. Dawkins was born June 10, 1915 in Laurens County, daughter of the late Carl Herman and Nate Burch Daniels. She was a retired Civil Service worker at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Warner Robins. Mrs. Dawkins was the widow of Robert Louie Dawkins.

 

Survivors include her two daughters, Jane Barron of Manchester and Justine (William) Finley of Rome; two grandchildren, Anita (Fred) Osborn and Robert (Leslie) Finley, all of Rome and three great grandchildren, Drew Finley, Chad Osborn and Brandon Osborn, all of Rome.

 

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Dawkins may be made to The Family Council at the Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs.

KENNETH MICHAEL NORRIS

June 19, 1949 – June 24, 2002

 

Kenneth Michael Norris, 53, of Warm Springs, died June 24 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral Services were held June 28 at Northside Baptist Church with Reverend Rickey Lipp officiating. Burial was at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.

 

Mr. Norris was born June 19, 1949 in Meriwether County, son of Margie Patrick Norris and the late Harold Eugene Norris. He was a carpenter, veteran of the U.S. Army and member of Northside Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include his mother, Margie P. Norris of Phenix City, Alabama; stepfather, Grady Heptinstall, also of Phenix City; four sons, Jason Norris of Woodbury, Joshua Norris, Austin Norris and Jessie Norris, all of  Warm Springs; one sister, Debra Norris of Manchester; two brothers, Jeffrey P. Norris, also of Manchester and Paul Norris of Cataula; two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Chad Norris.

BUFORD MOSES BROWN

June 11, 1918 – July 3, 2002

 

Buford Moses Brown, 84, of Warm Springs, died July 3 at Veterans Medical Center in Decatur. Graveside services were held at Meriwether Memory Gardens July 6 with Reverend Jimmy Bowden officiating, assisted by Reverend Norris Gibson. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

 

Mr. Brown was born June 11,1918 in Meriwether County, son of the late William Franklin Brown and the late Ola Ann Gilbert Brown. He was an auto mechanic, a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and C.C.C. and was a member of Fellowship Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Estelle Thornton Brown of Warm Springs; two daughters, Joan Moran, also of Warm Springs and Rebecca Callaway of Manchester; three sons, James M. Brown of Winder, John Funderburk of Manchester, and Richard Funderburk of LaGrange; one brother, Otis Brown of Manchester; two sisters, Laura Mae Boggs and Marie Barlow, both of Manchester; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

MRS. ESSIE MAE ELLIOTT 

July 5, 2002

 

Graveside services for Mrs. Essie Mae “Granny” Elliott, 71, of Woodbury, were held   July 9 from the Walker Cemetery of Woodbury. The Reverend M.S. Goggins officiated. Mrs. Elliott died July 5 at the Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.

 

Born in Atlanta and reared in Henry County, she was the daughter of the late Hiram Coppedge and Rosa Mae Henry. As a young woman she met and married the late Gordon Gene Elliott. “Granny” as she was known by all of her family and friends was the mother of nine children, three of whom preceded her in death. She was also a registered foster parent and serves as parent to many foster children. She was a devoted member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Griffin where she was the Mother of the Church.

 

She is survived by six children, Jeanie M. Elliott, Mattie (Joe) Elliott, Addie Joe Elliott, all of Woodbury, Diane Hardnet of Manchester, Martha (Henry) Green of Reynolds, Victor Alexander Coppedge of Fairburn; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Kate Wallace of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; one brother, Robert Dorsey of Cape Coral, Florida.

 

Harper’s Funeral Home of Manchester was in charge of arrangements.

HUBERT E. DUNN

August 6, 1916 – July 7, 2002

 

Hubert E. Dunn, 85, of Hamilton, died July 7 at his residence. Funeral services were held July 9 at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Reverend Joel Chapman officiating, assisted by Reverend Sidney Odom and Reverend Wallace Couty.

 

Mr. Dunn was born August 6, 1916 in Harris County, son of the late Leslie and Dollie Watson Dunn. He was an auto mechanic and a partner in Tri-County Auto Repair, member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, served as a deacon, clerk, Sunday School teacher and song director.

 

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth McDaniel Dunn of Hamilton; three sons, Douglas E. (Gloria) Dunn of Cumming, Charles K. Dunn (Chris) and Bradley S. Dunn (Joni), both of Shiloh; two sisters, Cloma Odom of Centerville and Patricia Mills of Thomasville; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren.

GREGORY SCOTT BRIDGES

July 3, 2002

 

Gregory Scott “Scotty” Bridges, 36, of Thomaston, died July 3 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital as a result of a pedestrian accident. Funeral services were held July 5 at Elkins Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Reverend. Dan Coogler was the officiating minister.

 

Mr. Bridges was born in Upson County and was employed by Dependable Waste Company as a route man. He was a member of the Elkins Creek Baptist Church in Thomaston.

 

Survivors include his wife, Amy Joyce Bridges of Thomaston; two sons, Tyler S. Bridges and William T. Bridges, both of Thomaston; mother, Mrs. Georgia Mae Bridges of Woodbury; brothers, Christopher Wayne Bridges and Joseph Randall Bridges, both of Woodbury; one sister, Kimberly Denise Beverly of Thomaston.

 

Memorial may be made to the Elkins Creek Church Building Fund, Hwy 75 West, Thomaston, GA 30286. Also, a memorial fund has been set up at the First National Bank of Barnesville (Zebulon Branch) under Scotty Bridges Memorial Fund, P O Box 869, Zebulon, GA 30295.

MRS. LYNDA SMITH DICKERSON

July 12, 2002

 

Mrs. Lynda Smith Dickerson, 79, of Thomaston, died July 12, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held July 14 at Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dean Hemphill officiating. Burial was at Crystal Hill Cemetery in Thomaston.

 

Mrs. Dickerson was a native of Upson County where she spent her entire life. She worked at the William Carter Company as a sewing machine operator for over 30 years and was a member of Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church and the WMU at Clark’s Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Dickerson and one son, Billy Dickerson.

 

Survivors include six sons, Richard Dickerson, Grover Dickerson of Titusville, FL, Ray Dickerson, Tim Dickerson, Tony Dickerson and Mark Dickerson , all of Thomaston; two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Denton of Thomaston and Mrs. Shirley Johnson of Manchester; two brothers, Mitchell Smith of Thomaston and Chester Smith of Tennessee; two sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Redford of Thomaston, and Mrs. Lucille Kinsler of Dahlonega; 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

JAMES WARREN "JIM" CHUNN

February 6, 1909 – July 8, 2002

 

James Warren “Jim” Chunn, 93, of Woodbury, died July 8 at Molena Nursing Home. Funeral services were held July 10 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury with burial at Woodbury City Cemetery. Reverend Herschel Phillips officiated and pallbearers were Danny Blue, Adam Blue, Jeff Sherrer, Billy Knight, Bill Brown, and Ralph Johnson.

 

Mr. Chunn was born February 6, 1909 in Meriwether County, son of the late Joseph Warren Chunn and the late Gussie Moultrie Chunn. He was a member of Woodbury United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include one sister, Sue Blue of Jackson; one brother, Norman Chunn of Woodbury; several nieces and nephews.

Willie G. (Hawk) Parker, 76, died July 3. Funeral services were held July 8 from The Church of Dothan with Sister J. Anderson and Brother Willie Ford officiating. Interment was at Church of Dothan Cemetery in Newville, Alabama.

 

Mr. Parker was born April 24, 1926, son of the late Leila Parker. He was a United States Army veteran and a landscaper. Church affiliations included the Church of Christ in Manchester and Church of Dothan., Dothan, AL.

 

Survivors include two aunts, Annie Huff of Manchester, and Willie Mae Parker of Atlanta; nieces, Annie J. Anderson of Headland, AL, Leila Brown of Stockbridge, Gloria Merdith and Mary Critten, both of Atlanta, and Nancy Grier of Woodland; nephews, Willie C. Parker of Manchester, Grady Grier of Woodland, Eddie Middlebrook, Stacy Garmon and Russell Garmon, all of Manchester, Curtis Garmon and Melvin Garmon, both of Atlanta; a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers in Christ; special friends, Elvis and Shirley Ward of Ashford, AL, and Regina Toliver White of Headland, AL.  He was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

 

Varner Memorial Funeral Home of Dothan, AL was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. CURTIS ELIZABETH CAMP

July 18, 2002

 

Mrs. Curtis Elizabeth Camp, 86, of College Park, died July 18, 2002. She is survived by a son, Charles “Andy” Camp, of Gainesville; a daughter, Hilda Jean Camp Speckter of Clayton; a brother, Eugene H. Hudson, of Raleigh, Georgia

 

Grandchildren include Tony Fields, Angela Yarbrough, Kelly Fields, Taylor Camp, Beau Renfroe, Sheridan Renfroe, and Brad Speckter.

 

Camp’s nine great-grandchildren are Adam Higginbotham, Jessica Yarborough, Anthony Fields, Melissa Fields, Kim Fields, Cade Speckter, Cole Renfroe, Jared and Phillip Hardy. Nieces and nephews also survive her.

 

The visitation will be tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Donehoo-Lewis Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Saturday, July 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Dr. Bill Lacy will officiate. The burial will be at Interment College Park Cemetery.

MRS. BIRDIA DERICO

Mrs. Birdia Derico, 97, died July 1. Funeral services were held July 22 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Milstead, Alabama with Reverend Adams officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs. Derico was born July 4, 1905 in Wetumpka, Alabama, daughter of the late Minnie and Busert T. Jeter. She was married to the late George Derico, Sr.

 

Survivors include two sons, Robert Lee Derico (Sarah) and Lamar Derico (Mary); a granddaughter and son-in-law, Shelia Fay Dozier (Norman), all of Manchester; four sisters, Cathy, Helen, Mariah, Grace; four brothers, Lindsey, TC, Joe C., Henry; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Two children, George Derico, Jr and Mary Derico preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were three sisters and seven brothers.

 

Anderson & Marshall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

William Leonard Poague, 77, of Shiloh, died July 22 at his residence. Graveside servies were held at Meriwether Memory Gardens July 24 with the Reverend Billy Colquitt, Sr. officiating, assisted by Reverend Sanford Colquitt and Reverend Joel Chapman.

 

Mr. Poague was born April 26, 1925 in Troup County, son of the late William Grady Poague and the late Helen Elaine Beall Poague. He worked in the maintenance department of Callaway Gardens, was a U. S. Army veteran, recipient of the Purple Heart, was a member and deacon of Bethlehem Baptist Church and member of VFW.

 

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Frances Smith Poague of Shiloh; sons, James Richard Poague of Newnan and William Johnny Poague of Shiloh; brother, and sister-in-law, James Raymond and Deane Poague of Simi Valley, California; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Grady Poague.

Ronnie Glenn Newman, 55, of Woodbury, died July 27 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held July 29 at Woodbury Baptist Church with the Reverend Drew Corbett officiating. Interment was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.

 

Pallbearers were Marty Newman, Alton Halliday, Jeffrey Fowler, Charles Hatchett, Carey Owens, and Mike McDaniel. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Walls, Marion Connell, Don Fuller, Wayne Brisendine, Drewry Head, Frank McRae, Jr., Lonnie Bowles and Guy Dawson.

 

Mr. Newman was born May 19, 1947 in Meriwether County, son of Mrs. Mildred Lucille McRae Newman and the late Harris B. Newman. He was plant manager for Durand Wayland Co., Inc. and a member of Woodbury Baptist Church where he served as an usher.

 

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Albritton Newman of Woodbury; mother and step-father, Glen M. and  Mildred Newman Fowler of Manchester; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Melisa Newman of Havelock, NC; one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Bobby Bishop of Manchester, one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Erlene Newman, also of Manchester; grandchildren, Trent Bishop, Trevor Bishop and Tia Marie Newman; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harris B. Newman.
