MRS. FRANCES MARSHALL

Mrs. Frances Marshall, 78, died February 15. Funeral services were held February 19 at St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Shiloh with the Reverend John L. Pollard officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Marshall was born April 18, 1921 in Talbot County, the daughter of the late Mrs. Susie Emma Buchanan and the late John Hunt. She joined St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Shiloh at an early age and was a faithful member until her health failed. She was the widow of Jessie Marshall.
Survivors include one brother, Eugene Buchanan and one devoted niece, Bettye (Tommy) Turner, all of Manchester; one aunt, Mrs. _____ Jean Terry, also of Manchester; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Jessie _oddie of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Her only child, Bettye Ann Marshall, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Virginia "Frances" Loftin, 82, of Manchester, died February 22 at Riverside Nursing Care Center in Thomaston. Graveside services were conducted February 24 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Manchester with Reverend Steve Quinn officiating. A memorial service was held February 26 at Bethesda Methodist Church.
Mrs. Loftin, a homemaker, was born in Meriwether County, and was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church in Manchester where she was the Superintended of Sunday School.
Survivors include her husband, Vernard Ray Loftin of Manchester; one son, Ray W. Loftin of Anaconda, Montana; one daughter, Mrs. Ida? Austin of Orlando, Florida; one brother, Everett Hinchliffe of Millen; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Joyner of Fairburn and Mrs. Mary Louise McClung of Locust Grove; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Charlie Reid Powell, Sr., 85, of Warm Springs, died February 25, at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held February 25 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester. Entombment followed in Warm Springs City Cemetery Mausoleum.
Mr. Powell was born January 21, 1915, in Woodbury, the son of the late Nellie Dixon Powell and William Clifford Powell. He was the retired owner of Hancocks Variety Store in Warm Springs, a US Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Woodbury First United Methodist Church and a former Warm Springs City Councilman. Mr. Powell was the widower of Margie Hancock Powell.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Powell of Warm Springs, and Andy Powell of McDonough; a brother, Harold Powell of Richmond, Virginia; three sisters, Mae Causey of Social Circle, Celeste Powell of Dublin and Nellie Coley of Hawkinsville; and three grandchildren.

George H. Mingea, 75, of Manchester, died February 26 at his home. Funeral services were held February 28 at First United Methodist Church, Manchester with entombment at Meriwether Memory Gardens, according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester. Reverend Sidney Tate, church pastor, officiated. Pallbearers were M.B. Guy, Dale Mann, Bonnie Sherrer, Charles Boswell, Allan Pearson, and Bubba Fishburne. The Singing Men of Manchester served as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Mingea was born August 18, 1924 in Manchester, the son of the late Stella Powers Mingea and Daniel H. Mingea. He retired from H. Goodman and Sons in 1988 and was formerly employed by U.S. Steel in Venezuela and Republican Steel in Liberia. Mr. Mingea was a US Navy veteran of World War Ii, having served in the Pacific, was a member of Manchester First United Methodist Church and its choir and he was also a member of the Singing Men of Manchester and the NRA.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Mingea of Manchester; a daughter, Stella Clark of Lake Park; a son, Dan Mingea of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Ethel Jean Montgomery of Macon; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Mingea may be made to Manchester First United Methodist Church for its current renovation project, or the Alzheimers Association.

John Westly (Shorty) Burks, 60, of Greenville died February 17 at The Medical Center in Columbus.
Mr. Burks was born in Woodbury, son of the late Kenney and Eliza Burks on September 27, 1939. He was a member of Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville, where he served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and member of the male chorus and community male chorus. He was also affiliated with the Greenville Beauty Lodge No. 268 where he held the rank of Past Master Degree of 32. He worked for the William Bonnell Company in Newnan, the State of Georgia, was a security guard at Mead Southern Wood and the Foundation in Warm Springs. After graduating from high school, he attended Albany State College.
Survivors include his wife, Barbra A. Burks of Greenville; one stepson, Marvin L. McLaughlin of LaGrange; two stepdaughters, Chantez L. (Cedric) Glanton of Hogansville and Marie D. McLaughlin of Greenville; two sisters, Georgia M. Miles of Naramja, Florida and Melzine Burks of Leisure City, Florida; two brothers, David F. Burks of Homestead, Florida and Richard (Mary) Burks of Greenville; one uncle, Lucius Burks of LaGrange; two aunts, Lizzie Burts and Glennie M. John William Statham, Sr., 83, of Manchester, died Wednesday, March 1 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Northside Baptist Church, with Reverend Tommy Harrison officiating, assisted by Reverend Henthorne. Interment followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens, with his grandsons serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Northside Baptist Church.
Mr. Statham was born April 10, 1916 in Poulan, Worth County, Georgia, a son of David Vinson Statham, Sr. and Carrie Bell Etheridge Statham. He retired from the spinning room at the Callaway and Milliken Mill, and with his wife, later operated Stathams Restaurant. He was a very active member of Northside Baptist Church, were he served in many capacities, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and was in charge of preparing all Brotherhood Meals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clidie M. Statham. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John W. Jr. and Irene Statham of Americus, and Tommy and Louise Statham of LaGrange; a daughter, Sharon Neely of Manchester; a sister, Maggie Taylor of Poulan; seven grandchildren, Mike Neely, Mark Neely, Matt Neely, Monte Neely, Jeff Statham, Tami Statham, and Zach Statham; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Statham may be made to Northside Baptist Church or Hospice LaGrange.

Mr. Dyson was born July 14, 1946 in Alexander County, North Carolina, the son of the late Henry Arvil Dyson and the late Stella Munday Dyson. He was a foreman for CSX Railroads as Track Inspector; was a US Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, and was a member of Abundant Life Worship Center.

Serving as pallbearers were Keith Marion, Lee Marion, Wade Broach, Buck White, Jack Meirer, and Larry Pritchett. Interment followed at Ft. Mitchell National Military Cemetery.
Mr. McCutchen was born April 18, 1940 in Columbus, a son of Walter Bolian McCutchen and Alma Page McCutchen. He was a chef and was the former owner of The Candybox Delicatessen in Millington, New Jersey. He was a US Navy veteran, having served as a baker in the 6th Fleet aboard the SS Rome, and was a member of Grace Family Church. He has served as a Shiloh City Councilman and was an active member of the Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department. He had been a member of the Elks Lodge and the Sirling, N.J. Volunteer Fire Department, and was a resident of Shiloh for the past 10 years.
Survivors include his mother, Alma McCutchen of Columbus; his wife, Jeanette W. McCutchen of Shiloh; seven sons, Jeffrey McCutchen of Edison, New Jersey, Danny McCutchen of Wycoff, New Jersey, James Warren of Ashland, Virginia, Harry Warren of Annandale, New Jersey, Neil Warren of Boundbrook, New Jersey, John Henry Warren of Kansas, and Mark Warren of Arizona; three daughters, Debbie Gilroy of Middlesex, New Jersey, Barbara Jean Doyle of New Jersey, and Denise Adams of Hillsboro; brothers Warren McCutchen of Waverly Hall, and ________McCutchen of Matamoras, Pennsylvania; sister Carole Phifer of Columbus; 13 grandchildren.

SARA LOIS HOWARD

Sara Lois Howard, 77, of Woodbury, died March 15 at West Georgia Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted March 18 at Faith Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Bowden officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers and burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Howard was born August 26, 1922 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Ben Tucker McCoy and the late Minnie Mae Smith McCoy. She was retired from Nabisco Company in the packing department and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Howard of Woodbury, David Howard of Manchester, and Kennith Howard of Stark, Florida; two daughters, Bonnie Waddell and Connie Thompson, both of Woodbury; two sisters, Lilla Mae Head of Woodbury and Frances Moore of Manchester; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Charlie Eugene Howard.

BILLY FELTON PHILLIPS

Billy Felton Phillips, 72, of Warm Springs, died March 22 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital. Funeral services were conducted March 24 from Mt. Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Tom Norton officiating, assisted by Reverend S. T. Janney and Reverend Mike Lott. Pallbearers were Sammy Middlebrooks, Felton Knight, Buddy Williams, Sammy Phillips, Hamp Phillips, and Jerry Cochran. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Homer Swan, Bill Jones, Randolph Jones and Luther Kurrass. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Phillips was born February 5, 1928 in Meriwether County, son of the late Edwin Levy Phillips and Hattie Mae Jones Phillips. He was retired from the Maintenance Department at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Warm Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Ola Mae Smith Phillips of Warm Springs; one daughter, Kathy Diane P. Clements of Warm Springs; two sons, William Felton Phillips, also of Warm Springs, and Robert Lee Phillips of Woodbury; one brother, James Phillips of Warm Springs; seven grandchildren.

Ray Eugene Waldrop, 76, of Manchester, died March 20 at Atlanta Medical Center. Funeral Services were conducted March 23 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with Reverend Franklin Treadwell officiating. Pallbearers were Pinson Garrett, Skip Woodall, Bonnie Sherrer, Jason Inman, Brownie Boseman, M.B. Guy, and Lannie Caldwell. Burial was in Meriwether Mausoleum.
Mr. Waldrop was born July 19, 1923 in Calhoun County, Alabama, son of the late Walter Waldrop and the late Ida Rae Waldrop. He was the retired Body Shop Manager at Meadows Motors, was a veteran of the US Army, having served in the European Theater during World War Ii; was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Libby Ashley Waldrop of Manchester; one daughter and son-in-law; Racine W. and Bobby Treadwell of Snellville; one son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Karen Waldrop of Jacksonville, Florida; three sisters, Lizz Lee Johnson, and Bertha Ansley; both of Talladega, Alabama and Helen Harrell of Oxford, Alabama; two grandchildren, Kelly King and Ashley Inman.

Robert L. (Bob) Marcus, 65, of Talbotton, died March 23, 2000 in Talbot County.
Funeral services for Mr. Marcus were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26 at Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester, with burial in Meriwether Memory Gardens. Reverend Gene Davis of Warm Springs Methodist Church officiated the service. Serving as pallbearers were Fred Horton, Robert Horton, James Marcus, Allen Hoppe, Brad Anderson, Bryan Anderson, Wayne Gresham, and Barry Marcus.
Mr. Marcus was born April 19, 1934 in Woodbury, son of Mrs. Virginia Bowden Findley and the late James Benjamin Marcus, Jr. He was the retired partner of a wholesale grocery business in Jesup. He was a deacon of the Morningside Baptist Church in Savannah. Mr. Marcus served as a US Army veteran of the Korean War and had lived near Talbotton for the past seven years.
Survivors include his mother, Virginia B. Findley of Warm Springs; two brother, Paul Marcus of Riverdale and Ben Marcus of Birmingham, Alabama; two sisters, Sue Anderson of Warm Springs and Hilde Hoppe of Charlotte, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews.
