MRS. MABLE K. DAVIS

December 21, 1916 - April 23, 2002

 

Mrs. Mable K. Davis, 85, of Manchester, passed away April 23 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held April 25 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home with Bro. Cary Hicks officiating. Burial followed at Friendship Church Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were James Smith, David Shearouse, Tommy Smith, Eric Bridge, Michael Bridge and Stephen Beck.

 

Mrs. Davis was born December 21, 1916 in Morris County, Texas, daughter of the late Bob and Eva Rollins Kersey. She was a homemaker and a member of Manchester First Assembly of God Church.

 

Survivors include her husband, James Robert Davis of Manchester; three sons, Derrell Benton of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Lavern Benton of Fitzgerald, and Michael Beck of Rincon; one sister, Vergielene Bridge of Manchester; one brother, Sidney Kersey of Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

RUFUS L. WARD

August 20, 1919 - April 26, 2002

 

Rufus L. Ward, 82, of Covenant Woods, died April 26 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services were held April 29 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Macon Road Chapel with burial in Parkhill Cemetery. Jason War, Andy Colburn, Matt Simon, David Adkins, Keith Sutton and David Hill served as pallbearers.

 

Mr. Ward was born August 20, 1919 in Plains, son of the late William Thomas and Lucy Bell Bond Ward. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, served in the 92nd Chemical Mortar Battalion. He retired with AFLAC Security after seven years, had worked for Tom’s Food in the candy department, Metcalf’s Department Store and Ideal Cleaners. He was a member of the Gentian Baptist Church, and the Triple L. Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Modell Boutwell Ward and his second wife, Beulah Grounds Adkins Ward.

 

Survivors include two sons, Richard L. Ward and his wife Martha of Manchester and David M. Ward of Fort Walton, Florida; stepchildren and their spouses, David and Karen Adkins of Beverly Hills, Florida, and Tom and Linda Adkins of Safety Harbor, Florida; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Ward of Columbus, Kristin W. Colburn of Carrolton, and Jason War of Columbus; step-grandson, David Edward Adkins of Columbus; a great-grandson, Caleb Ward Colburn of Carrolton; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Frances Leona Brown, 74, of Woodbury, passed away April 28 at Florence Hand Home in LaGrange. Funeral Services were held at Cove Baptist Church April 30 with C. L. “Red” Roberson officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were Lamar Brown, Larry Brown, Lamar Ousley, Barry Brown, Blake Brown, and Roland Brown.

 

Mrs. Brown was born September 20, 1927 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Julius W. and Lottie Bishop Brown. She was a rate clerk for Royal Globe Insurance Company and a member of Cove Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include two brothers, Aubrey Brown of Thomaston, and Bowman Brown of Woodbury; two nephews and their wives, Barry and Kim Brown of Jupiter, Florida and Blake and Bette Brown of Houston, Texas; a great-niece, Bethany Brown of Jupiter, Florida.

MRS. GLADYS A. PARKER

Jan. 23, 1907 - April 28, 2002

 

Mrs. Gladys Adkins Parker, 95, of Petersburg, West Virginia and formerly of Manchester, died April 28 at the E. A. Hawse Continuous Care Center, Baker, West Virginia where she had resided the past year. Graveside services will be Saturday, May 4 at 11 AM in the Manchester City Cemetery, Manchester, Georgia.

 

Born January 22, 1907 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Robert Homer Adkins and Jannie Patterson Adkins. She was a member of Manchester Baptist Church and had resided with her son, Jack Wade Parker in Petersburg for the past 35 years.

 

Survivors include one son, Jack Wade Parker of Petersburg, West Virginia; one sister, Ruth Hauze of Senoia; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zellars “Pete” Parker in 1942. She was also preceded by four sisters and four brothers.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Talmadge Eugene Allen, 68, of Manchester, passed away May 3 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were conducted May 6 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with Ed White officiating. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.

 

Pallbearers were Otis Terrell, Freddie Terrell, Chris Terrell and Daniel Pack.

 

Mr. Allen was born November 17, 1933 in Troup County, son of the late Jim and Pearl Heard Allen. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict, was an auto mechanic and was a Baptist.

 

Survivors include his ex-wife, Rosa Lee Hendrix Terrell of Manchester; two stepsons, Otis Terrell, also of Manchester and Freddie Terrell of LaGrange; two sisters, Mary Pearl Williamson of LaGrange, and Beatrice Buttrum of Gulf Breeze, Florida; six step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lou Amy Brown Nipper, 84, of Manchester, died April 30 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Graveside services were held May 3 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend John Simmons, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church, officiating.

 

Mrs. Nipper was born October 13, 1917 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Ida Lee and Jesse Elijah Brown. She was a retired LPN and worked for many years at the former Warm Springs Foundation. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and enjoyed her membership at the Manchester Senior Center.

 

Survivors include one sister, Charity Portwood of Fayetteville; a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon A. Nipper and two sisters, Mae Rabon and Judy Sronce.

Mrs. Dora Ledbetter Smith, 91, of Thomaston, died May 4 at Thomaston Health and Rehab. Graveside services were held May 7 at Upson Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Arthur Coogler officiating.

 

Mrs. Smith was born in Floyd County but lived most of her life in Thomaston. She was retired from BF Goodrich with 30 years service in the spinning  department and was a member of Emory’s Chapel Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include three sons, A. C. Smith of Thomaston, Billy J. Smith of Manchester, and Ernest Smith, Jr., also of Thomaston; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Ellis of Thomaston and Mrs. Betty Handley of Dublin; one brother, Floyd Ledbetter of Rome; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. from the Bethel AME Church in Woodbury. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Myron Deas will officiate.

 

Mr. Slaton was a lifelong resident of Woodbury, the son of the late David and Lucy Tyson Slaton and a member of Bethel AME Church.

 

Survivors include two sisters, Lois White of Woodbury, and Catherine (Willie) Puckett of Atlanta; three brothers, David Slaton, Sr., of  Brisco, Florida, Willie (Rebecca) Slaton, Tommy (Annie Ruth) Slaton of Riverdale; three aunts, Ewillie Taylor of Decatur, Christine Slaton of Tampa, Florida, and Margaret Wolf of Atlanta; three uncles, Henry Lee Clark, Johnny Slaton of Woodbury, and John Albert (Izola) Slaton of Miami, Florida; a very special and devoted friend, Scotty Carter of Fayetteville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Child was born January 4, 1927 in Fulton County. She was the daughter of the late John Mason and Lula O’Farrell. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Manchester.

Child, Jr., of Manchester; four daughters, Mickie Carr of Conyers, Melodi Holton of Camilla and Merrie Ann Vaughan of St. Augustine, Florida; two sons, Frank M. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith-Steele-Meadows Chapel in Woodbury with Rev. James Schwarzlose officiating. Interment was at Jones Chapel in Woodbury.

 

Mrs. Clay was born July 19, 1923 in Meriwether County. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Johnnie Mealor. She was retired from Nabisco in Woodbury and was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and an avid gardener and was a loving mother, having raised five children.

 

Survivors include her husband, Aldean Clay of Woodbury; four sons, Edward Dean Clay of  Warm Springs. Tom Linda Clay of Stark, Florida, Henry Jackson Clay of Parker, Florida, and William Clay of Orchard Hill; one daughter, Lily Morgan of Stockbridge; one brother, Walter Mealor of Cataula; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Pike was born August 21, 1946 in Outagamie County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late Elmer John and Dorothy Brock. She was a homemaker.

 

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Samuel Pike of Manchester; five sons, John Paul Pike, Aaron Pike and Jeremiah Pike, all of Manchester, Benjamin Pike of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Joshua Pike of Senoia; one sister, Betty Remter of Chilton, Wisconsin; one brother, Robert Brock of Marietta; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Dorothy Kate Lane Hughes, 65, passed away May 11 at Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Care Center in Cartersville. Funeral services were held May 17 at Leverette Hill Baptist Church, Warm Springs, with the Rev. Tracy Neal, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs. Hughes was born January 2, 1937 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Ed and Earline Lane. She was a member of the Leverette Hill Baptist Church during her early years but she attended churches in Cartersville after moving there. In December of 1967, she was united in Holy Matrimony with James Hughes who  now lives in Canton.

 

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Ola Mae (Willie Lewis) Harris; two brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) Barnes and Joseph (Louise) Barnes; nine special nieces and nephews, Beverly Ann (Kenneth) Billinger, Tiffany (Jeffery) Holloway, Gloria, Shonda, Cherry, Kenneth, Jessica, Marvin Jr. (Alice) Barnes, and Barbara (Todd) DeLoach; her extended family, Don and Connie Evans and their children Don Jr. (Francoise), Carolyn (Ray) Evans and Martin (Susan) Evans. She worked for them for 35 years. She also has a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

Mrs.  Hamler was born May 2, 1919 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Jake and Carrie Terry. Until her health declined, she was a faithful and active member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church and stewardess board.

 

Survivors include her husband, Roland Hamler; six children, Margaret Felton (Charles), Hazel Daughtery (Benny) of Atlanta, Brinson Hamler (Verna) of Decatur, Mary Terry, George Hamler (Yvonne) of Manchester and Danny Hamler (Janice), Texarkana, Arkansas; two grandchildren  she reared as her own, Andre Hamler and Cassandra Hamler of Atlanta; three sisters, Dorothy Terry, Christa Willingham of Atlanta and Aubrey Terry of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, Precious Hollis and Mary Hollis of Waverly Hall; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by two sons, Roland Hamler, Jr. And Robert Hamler.

Mrs. Doris Dukes Hear, 89, of Woodbury, passed away May 18 at her residence. Funeral services were held May 20 at Manchester Church of the Nazarene with the Reverend Joe Lennon officiating. Burial followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

 

Mrs. Heard was born April 14, 1913 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late James Olin Waddell and Mary “Madie” Owens Waddell. She had worked at the Callaway Mill, Goody’s, International Playtex, and retired from Nabisco in Woodbury. Mrs. Heard was a member of the Manchester Church of the Nazarene where she was a former nursery Sunday School teacher.

 

Survivors include five daughters, Margaret Dukes Ledford of Woodbury, Jackie Dukes Jones of Locust Grove, Juanice Dukes Griffin of Riverdale, Patricia Dukes Strickland of Orlando, Florida and Becky Dukes Bulloch of Woodbury; three sons, Roscoe Dukes, Jr., of Camilla, Wilburn Dukes of Sharpsburg, and Melvin Lee Dukes, also of Sharpsburg; four sisters, Johnnie Pearl Trawick and Sarah Wadsworth Phillips, both of Manchester, Aundie Mae Fowler of Warm Springs and Bettye Jean Whitaker of Woodbury; one brother, James “Boy” Waddell of Jessup; 22 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Roscoe Dueks and her second husband, John Preston Heard.

Eugene Thompson, Jr., 98, of Warm Springs, passed away May 16 at Roosevelt Place, Warm Springs. Funeral services were conducted May 19 at Smith-Steele-Meadows Chapel with John Ferstead officiating. Burial was at Rehoboth Cemetery in Cataula.

 

Mr. Thompson was born February 24, 1904 in Cataula, son of the late Eugene Thompson, Sr., and the late Lillie Belle Ellington Thompson. He attended school in Harris County and graduated from Opelika, Alabama High School. He had been a farmer and retired from the Central of Georgia Railroad. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.

 

Survivors include one sister, Florence Thompson Joiner of Blairsville; sister-in-law, Frances Thompson of Rutledge; two nephews, Doug Joiner of Blairsville and Emory Thompson of Rutledge; two nieces, Martha Parks of Headland, Alabama, and Mary Frances Threadgill of Winder; a number of grand nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ramey Thompson, two brothers, William and George Thompson, and two sisters, Blannie Hodges and Mattie Belle Smith.

William Sherrill (Bill) Miles, 65, of LaGrange, died May 18 at Newnan Hospital. Funeral services were held May 21 in the chapel of the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Reverend S.T. Janney officiating. Burial followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

 

Mr. Miles was born January 18, 1937 in Randolph County, Alabama, son of the late Ted and Nino Miles. He lived in LaGrange most of his life and had served in the United States Arm Special Forces as a military police officer.  He was a Mason, a member of Elm City Lodge #544, an avid gardener and was named “Outstanding Man of the Year” by the Jaycees. He was a vice president of Talbot State Bank in Woodland and Baptist by faith.

 

Survivors include his wife, Nancy T. Miles of LaGrange; a son and daughter-in-law, William Turner (Bill) and Sonya D. Miles of LaGrange; three grandchildren, Will Miles, Ted Miles and Mary Kate Miles, all of LaGrange; a sister and brother-in-law, Jearline and Galin Caldwell of LaGrange; three nephews, Don Caldwell, Bill Caldwell and Walter Caldwell, all of LaGrange.

Mrs. Gilbert was born September 26, 902 in Valdosta, daughter of the late Ela Pearl Law Mathis and the late Joseph Mathis.  She was a member of Cove Baptist Church, retired from the Internal Revenue Service and was a registered certified genealogist, and was a member of the James W. Pittman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Jackson County.

 

Survivors include three sons, James Donald Gilbert and Emmitt Rowe Gilbert, both of Woodbury, and Lawrence Daniel Gilbert of West Columbia, South Carolina; one sister, Geraldine Gissendanner of Eufaula, Alabama; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Daniel Gilbert.

JOHNNY BOB CREAMER

Johnny Bob Creamer, 49, of Manchester, died May 24 at his home. Funeral services were held at Cove Baptist Church May 26 with Brother Gene Rosinbaum, pastor of Pine Mountain Valley First Baptist Church, officiating.  Pallbearers were Ronnie Bulloch, Steve Alverson, Kevin Jackson, Anthony Bishop, Stanley Cartwright and Oscar Phillips.

 

Mr. Creamer was born September 2, 1953 in Newnan, son of Virginia Elease Bishop Creamer and John Lacy Creamer. He was a partner in Georgia Southern Roofing, member and deacon at West End Baptist Church, was a US. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Vietnam War.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Creamer of Manchester; two daughters, Lacy Creamer of Manchester and Jessica Creamer of Columbus; two sons, Wade Creamer and Jon Creamer, both of Manchester; one brother, Kim Creamer, also of Manchester; three grandsons, Austin, Zachary and Gabriel, all of Manchester.

Mrs. Phyllis Olivent Mills, 48, of Bainbridge, died May 22. Funeral services were held May 24 at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel with burial at New Enterprise Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Iron City.

 

Mrs. Mills was born November 12, 1953 in Bainbridge, daughter of Herbert A. Olivent and Dorothy Williams Olivent. She  married Roy Eldridge Mills on September 23, 1983, was a homemaker and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Mills of Bainbridge; three sons and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Peggy Mills, Rocky Mills and Bo Mills of Bainbridge; a brother and sister-in-law, Al and Vicky Olivent of Manchester; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelia and Daniel Halpern of Tallahassee, Florida; parents, Herbert and Dot Williams Olivent of Bainbridge; a grandson, Will Mills of Bainbridge; two nieces, Jenna Halpern of Tallahassee and Ruth Olivent Durham of Watkinsville; a nephew, Max Halpern of Tallahassee.

Mr. Sherriff was born October 20, 1923 in Dawson County, son of the late William Henry and Sarah Louise Weehunt Sherriff. He was a used care salesman, veteran of the US Army and was a Baptist.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Janice S. Johnson of Talbotton; one sons, Michael Sherriff Krueger; five grandchildren.

Mrs. Pauling (Polly) Blanton Holden, 93, of Atlanta, died April 15. She was the widow of the late Lowry Stephens Holden.

 

A native of Talbotton, she was the daughter of the late William Benjamin Blanton, Sr. And Sarah Fryer Blanton. She was a graduate of Talbotton High School and the Southern Business College of Atlanta. She was Sales Promotion Clerk with John Deere Co., Atlanta and retired in 1971 with 35 years of service. She was past President of the Peachtree Pilot Club, member of the Atlanta Athletic Club and member of the First United Methodist Church, Atlanta.

 

Funeral services were held April 17 at the Westview Abbey, Atlanta with the Reverend Dan Brown officiating.

 

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Reyno (Betty) Petree of Bethlehem and a brother, Ret. Col. Eugene T. Blanton of Sacramento, California and a host of niece, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Ms. Frances Naomi Johnson, 85, of Manchester died May 25 at Newnan Hospital. Funeral services were held May 25 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Reverend C.R. Hicks officiating, assisted by Reverend John Simmons.

 

Burial was at Manchester City Cemetery with George Kennedy Jr., Jerry Threadgill, Ricky Walton, Tom Pierce, Terry Threadgill, Ronnie Ogletree, Sammy McGraw and Richard Holstrom serving as pallbearers.

 

Mrs.  Johnston was born March 8, 1917 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mary Murphy Threadgill. She was a homemaker.

 

Survivors include two sons, Kirby Johnson of Woodbury, and Dr. Landis Johnson of Vidalia; two daughters, Diane McLendon of Woodbury, and Arlene Olvera of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Johnson and Mildred Johnson; six grandchildren. Donations to American Diabetes or American Cancer Society may be made in the memory of Mrs. Johnson.

Roy Dallas Parrott, 77, of Manchester, died May 20 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Graveside services were held at City Cemetery May 23 with Isham Wright officiating.

 

Mr. Parrott was born December 10, 1924 in Meriwether County, son of the late Murry and Sallie Chapman Parrott. He was a carpenter at Milliken & Company for 40+ years and retired from the Maintenance Department with Goody Products. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during World War II and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Scott Parrott of Shiloh; two daughters, Margaret     Wright of LaGrange, and Anita Funderburk of Shiloh; six sisters, LeDonia Windham of Macon, Mayo McDonald, Eva Mae Koon and Zannie Bennett, both of Shiloh, Eloise Sherrer and Shirley Parrott, both of Manchester; two brothers, Byron Parrott of Macon, and James Parrott of Manchester; three grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother,Preston Parrott.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Ruby Frances (Polly) Ousley, 85, of Woodbury on May 28 at Smith-Steele-Meadows Chapel in Woodbury with Reverend Cullen Clements officiating. Interment was in the Cove Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers included Bowman Brown, Martin Gibson, Lamar Brown, Larry Brown, Davis Duncan and Steve Stewart. Honorary pallbearers were David Edmonson, Pete Melton, Bobby Melton, Roland Brown, Aubrey Brown and Phil Owens.

 

Mrs. Ousley died May 25 at Georgia Baptist Warm Springs Hospital.

 

She was born of February 25, 1917 to the late Julius P. Brown and Julia Frances Newman in Meriwether County. Mrs. Ousley was a former employee of Callaway Mills and Goody Products. She was a member of the Cove Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include her son, Richard Lamar Ousley and daughter-in-law, Cathie of Woodbury; one grandson, John Warren Ousley of Athens; one sister, Mrs. Orell Reaves of Woodbury. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Richard Ousley.

Preston Douglas “Doug” Barlow, 54, of Greenville, died May 25 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services were held May 26 from the Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury with Reverend Jimmy Bowden officiating. Burial was in the Barlow family cemetery in Greenville. Serving as pallbearers were Andy Whatley, John Crawford, Ronnie Faulkner, Jack Faulkner, Lee Raney, Stan Jones, Clayton Plemmons and Marion Connell.

 

Mr. Barlow was born February 23, 1948 in Jacksonville, Florida, a son of Preston R. and Margaret Milligan Barlow. He graduated from Paxton High School in Jacksonville in 1965 and served nine years in the US Army, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury where he was the choir leader and song director. He worked at Mead Southern Wood Products in Greenville for 25 years ad a heavy equipment operator. After being employed at Mead and his first battle with cancer, he became the Business Manager of the Laborers Local Union 1073. He was also a trustee member of the Laborers District Council of Georgia and South Carolina.

 

Survivors include his parents, Preston R. and Margaret M. Barlow of Satsuma, Florida; wife, Karin K. Barlow of Greenville; daughter Erika Purgason and son-in-law, Jamie Purgason of Greenville; sister, LuAnn Kimball of Manchester; grandson, Jacob Stone of Greenville; several nieces and nephews.
