BRYAN FUNDERBURK
June 19, 1957 - October 31, 2001

Bryan Funderburk, 44, of the Durand Community, died October 31 in Columbus. Graveside services were conducted November 4 at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend Eugene Wiseman, pastor of Harmony Church of the Nazarene, officiating, assisted by Rev. Bruce Brown, pastor of Grace Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Jones, Joey Jones, Larry Williams, Steven Dunn, Brent Youngblood, Chuck Chapman, and Jason Stewart.

Mr. Funderburk was born June 19, 1957 in Columbus, a son of the late Paul Edison Funderburk and Anne Haynes Funderburk. He was a self-employed general contractor and electrician and was a member of the Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Warm Springs.

Survivors include his mother, Anne H. Funderburk; one son, Justin Funderburk; one brother, Ricky Funderburk, all of Durand.

 MRS. NELL TIDWELL ROLLINS
May 19, 1915 - November 5, 2001

Mrs. Nell Tidwell Rollins, 86, of Greenville, died November 5 at Columbus Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted November 6 at Greenville Cemetery with Reverend Jonathan Porter, pastor of Greenville Baptist Church, officiating. Honorary pallbearers were her former students.

Mrs. Rollins was born May 19, 1915 in Gay, daughter of the late Willie Frank and Lonie Herndon Tidwell. She retired from the Meriwether County School System as an English teacher after 30 years and had taught at Greenville High and Manchester High. She was an active member of the Meriwether County Retired Teachers Association, was a member of Greenville Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, and was a volunteer at West Georgia Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Janelle and Charles E. Whalen, Jr. of Gainesville, and Pamela Michelsen of Nantucket, Massacheesetts; five grandchildren, Charles Edward (Mayu) Whalen, III, of Atlanta, Mary Ann (Mike) Schmidt of Greenville, South Carolina, Katherine Nell Michelsen of Washington, D.C., Nathaniel Michelsen of Boston, Massachusetts, and Hunter Herndon Michelsen of Nantucket, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry F. Rollins and William R. Rollins.

MRS. FLORA FRANCES THREADGILL

Ms. Flora Frances Threadgill, 86, of Manchester, passed away October 30 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Graveside services were held November 2 at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Reverend C. L. Roberson officiating.

Mrs. Threadgill was born January 31, 1915 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Charles Floyd Gilbert and the late Nancy Arvella Brown Gilbert. She was a retired owner/operator of Threadgill’s Grocery, was a homemmaker and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirlene T. Melton of Manchester; three sons, Victor Threadgill, Jerry Threadgill, and Terry Threadgill, all of Manchester; one sister, Cornie Gibson of Woodbury; two brothers, Paul Gilbert of Woodbury and Oscar Gilbert of Manchester; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband A. V. Threadgill.

Johnny Clifford Pettie, 54, died October 29 at his home. Funeral services were held November 4, at New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend Wallace Steed officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Pettie was born January 7, 1947 to Priscilla Holmes and the late Johnny Pearl Pettie. He was born and raised in Meriwether County.

Survivors, other than his mother, include six sisters, Hattie Spence of LaGrange, Annie Bell Johnson, Dorothy Campbell, Patricia Harvey and MeCinda Faye Jenkins, all of Miami, Florida, and Brenda Holmes of College Park; two brothers, Sammy Prather of Manchester, and Willie Ralph Harris of Miami; one uncle, Wilbur Pettie of Columbus; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

MRS. MARINELL MONTGOMERY BARKER
November 26, 1915 - November 3, 2001

Mrs. Marinell Montgomery Barker, 85, of Lilburn, formerly of Manchester, passed away November 3 at the home of her son, Monty Barker who cared for her for the past 13 years. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Manchester on Wednesday with interment at 3:00 p.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery, according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester. Officiating ministers will be Reverend Floyd Carmack, Reverend Kenneth Russell, and Reverend Bruce Bunten. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Barker was born November 26, 1915 in Manchester, daughter of the late James Henry and Anna Guy Montgomery. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College and was retired from the City of Atlanta as Recreation Director after 20 years. Mrs. Barker was a member of Manchester First United Methodist Church , the Manchester Woman’s Club, and was the first president of the Junior Woman’s Club.

She was active in the Garden Club and enjoyed the challenge and social aspects of her Bridge Club.

She was the widow of Maynard D. Barker and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Maye Barker Reed.

Survivors include one daughter, Gail Barker Smith of Hilton Head, South Carolina; three sons, Maynard D. Barker, Jr. of Hilton Head, Henry Montgomery Barker of Lilburn, and Clifford Lee Barker II of Hilton Head; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; other special relatives, Marvin and Macy Montgomery, Barbara Nolan, Charlotte Montgomery, Happy Montgomery, Laverne Montgomery Chapman, Vann Chapman and many loved ones of the Guy and Montgomery family tree.

BILLY SPRAGGINS
November 7, 2001

Billy Spraggins, 63, of Thomaston, died November 7 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted November 10 at the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home in Thomaston with the Reverend Floyd Nelson and the Reverend Carol Fox officiating. Entombment was at Upson Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Spraggins was born in Meriwether County, but lived most of his life in Thomaston. He was a retired carpenter, worked for the State of Georgia Department of Transportation for 29 years, and attended Sylvia Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Spraggins of Thomaston; three sons, Joe Spraggins and Wayne (Ann) Spraggins, both of Thomaston, and Timothy L. Spraggins of Atlanta; one brother, Eddie Spraggins of Manchester; two sisters, Betty Brown of Manchester, and Martha S. Moreland of Thomaston and four grandchildren.

Donation in memory of Mr. Spraggins may be made to American Cancer Society (Upson County Unit), P. O. Box 841, Thomaston, GA 30286 or the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Johnnie Pearl Tidwell O’Neal, 83, of Greenville, died November 11 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center in Thomson. Funeral services were conducted at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester November 13 with Dr. Jimmy Elder, pastor of First Baptist Church, Thomson, officiating. Burial followed in Crouch Cemetery in Gay with Shane Sanders, Reid Sanders, Neil Foster, Stanley Foster, Will Keller and Ben Keller serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. O’Neal was born October 24, 1918 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Bertha Roberts Tidwell and the late John Ed Tidwell. She was a homemaker, member of Gay Baptist Church and was the widow of Willie Lee O’Neal.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Frances Kay O’Neal Sanders and Dennis C. Sanders of Thomson; one sister, Ruth Tidwell Foster of Griffin; two brothers, Aubrey H. Tidwell of Manchester and William E. Tidwell of Luthersville; two grandchildren, Shane (Rebecca) Sanders and Reid Sanders, all of Thomson.

Mrs. Mable Louise Smith Evans, 78, of Stockbridge, died November 9, at Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge. Funeral services were conducted November 21 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with burial at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Durand. Reverend Ken Davidson was the officiating minister, assisted by Howard Taylor, and Reverend Bryan Geter. Pallbearers were Howard Evans, William Evans, Vence Willitts, Mitch Willitts, Ronnie Evans, Robert Burnett and John Crisp.

Mrs. Evans was born April 19, 1923 in Rockingham County, North Carolina, daughter of the late J.T. and Pearl Holbrook Smith. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Christian Church in Stockbridge.

Survivors include one daughter, Shelia A. Veal of Stockbridge; one son, Lamar Evans of Warm Springs; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.

Mackrell Lewis "Perch" McDaniel, 60, of Greenville, died November 9 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted November 12 from Greenville Baptist Church with Reverend Jonathan Porter officiating, assisted by Reverend Floyd Tenny. Burial followed at Greenville Presbyterian Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Roy Mitchell, Richard Mitchell, Edward Mitchell, Bill Mitchell, Barry Ellenburg, Robert Hinton and Sandy Garrett. Honorary pallbearers were the members of Meriwether County Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. McDaniel was born March 18, 1941 in Taylor County, son of the late Bernice McDaniel. He was retired as a textile maintenance worker and was a member of Greenville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Flournoy McDaniel of Greenville; one son, Timmy McDaniel, also of Greenville; one daughter, Lori Ann Hampshire of Forsyth; one brother, Benny Cook of Reynolds; one sister, Sandra Smith of Ellaville; and three grandchildren.

RAYMOND REX MCDANIEL
May 30, 1928 - November 15, 2001

Raymond Rex McDaniel, 73, of Shiloh, died November 15 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Funeral services were held November 18 at the First Baptist Church Shiloh, with burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The Reverend Don Voyles, his former pastor officiated, assisted by Reverend Chris Davis, pastor of Second Baptist Church of LaGrange.

Mr. McDaniel was born May 30, 1928 in Harris County, son of the late William Henry and Nina Grant McDaniel. He was a retired sawmill owner and operator, former Chairman of the Harris County Board of Commissioners, was a former council member of the City of Shiloh, and was instrumental in its incorporation. He was a charter member of the Valley Plains Chamber of Commerce in Shiloh, attended First Baptist Church in Shiloh and was a lifelong resident of Harris County.

Survivors include his wife, Grace McDaniell; one daughter, Laura (Tom) Helton; four sons, Billy (Sue) McDaniel, Scott (Ellen) McDaniel, Allan (Connie) McDaniel, all of Shiloh, and Jeff (Debra) McDaniel of Manchester; two sisters, Anne (Jerry) Chapman and Faye (Homer) Swann, both of Shiloh; 15 grandchildren.

JOSEPH WILSON MOODY
March 29, 1927 - November 15, 2001

Joseph Wilson Moody, 74, of Jonesboro, died November 15 in Riverdale. Graveside services were conducted November 17 at Meriwether Memory Gardens with the VFW Post Honor Guard serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Moody was born March 29, 1927 in Warm Springs, son of the late Minnie Lee and Alphus Gomer Moody. He was a retired US Navy veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars and was a member of VFW Post 6330 and American Legion Post 258 in Jonesboro. He was also a member of the Region 2 Board of Mental Health, and worked for Clayton County Sheriff’s Office for six years after retiring from the Navy.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Moody and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maxwell Moody, both of Jonesboro; one daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. (Brenda) May of Senoia; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Mann Moody.

JAMES BENNETT THOMPSON

A memorial gathering was held for James Bennett Thompson, 67, of Roswell, New Mexico November 15 at the family home. James passed away at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center November 14.

Mr. Thompson was born to Julian Bennett Thompson and Ruby Lanier Thompson October 7, 1934 in Manchester. He had lived in Roswell since 1974, moving there from Denver. He retired from the US Air Force with the rank of senior master sergeant and at the time of his death was working as an inspector for Quality Control Engineering.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; five sons, Jim Thompson and his wife, Paula, of Roswell, John Thompson and his wife, Anita, of Roswell, Blake Thompson of Cloudcroft, Mark Haley and his wife, Alyssa, of Irving, Texas; grandchildren, Taylor, Jessica and Conner Thompson, and Chandler and Shaun Haley; one sister, Ann Sistrunk of Manchester; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Wayne Thompson of Manchester.

Jack Ervin Clark, 79, of Woodbury, passed away November 18 at Molena Nursing Home in Molena. Graveside services were conducted at Woodbury Cemetery with the Reverend Drew Corbett officiating. Woodbury Police Department served as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Clark was born February 22, 1922, son of the late Virgil and Lottie Mae Huff Clark. He had worked as a police officer in Manchester and Woodbury and retired from the Woodbury Police Department.

He was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Manchester, and the Georgia Peace Officers Association.

Survivors include two sons, Cary Michael Clark of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Chris Clark of Stockbridge; one daughter, Jackie C. Smith of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; one brother, Harold Clark of Marietta; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Perry Clark.

VERNARD RAY LOFTIN
November 22, 2001

Vernard Ray Loftin, 92, died November 22 at Georgia Baptist Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Graveside services were conducted November 24 from Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Manchester with the Reverend Steve Quinn, the Reverend John Simmons, and the Reverend Carolyn Evans officiating.

Mr. Loftin was a self-employed brick mason and helped built the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation Institute. He was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Frances Loftin.

Survivors include one son, Ray W. Loftin of Anaconda, Montana; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Austin of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Ms. Moreland was born February 19, 1913 in Upson County, daughter of the late Jacob Bunyan Wright and the late Sallie Belle Brown Wright. She was a retired weaver for Milliken & Co., and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Hiram Wright of Riverdale; three sisters, Zelma Garrett, Aurelia McDowell and Cornelia Newman, all of Manchester; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted November 24 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester with the Reverend Rex King, pastor of Mountain View Baptist Church, officiating, assisted by the Reverend Eugene Wiseman, pastor of Harmony Church of the Nazarene. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Larry Doggett, Michael Doggett, Michael Chapman, Pascal Chapman, Roland Dukes and Eddie Adkerson serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Doggett was born September 1, 1927 in Manchester, son of the late William and Winnie Owens Doggett. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was retired from Owens-Illinois Corp., was a US Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Thomaston.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia Railey Doggett of Warm Springs; three daughters, Rhonda Williams of Pine Mountain, Roxanne Borett of Columbus, and Cherry Chapman of Warm Springs; two sons, Jasper Lee Doggett, Jr., of Warm Springs, and Stephen Doggett of Pine Mountain; three sisters, Myrtle Dukes of Woodbury, Grace Fowler of Warm Springs, and Marlene Garrett of LaGrange; 12 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
