Kelvin Phillip Johnson

Funeral services for Kelvin Phillip Johnson, 42, of Woodbury, who died October 29 at his home, were held November 2 from the Concord CME Church of Woodbury with the Reverend C.J. Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Woodland City Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born in Meriwether County, son of Calvin and Annie Mahone Johnson. He was educated in the public schools and in 1980 he joined the United States Army and fought in Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged in June 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Alford Johnson of Woodbury; two children, Frank Alford of Manchester and Charmain Johnson of Woodbury; parents, Calvin and Annie Grace Johnson of Woodbury; four grandchildren; brothers and sister, Karl Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Jackie Lee Clark and Linda Faye Clark of Woodbury; one uncle, Willie (Doris) Slaton of Jonesboro; daughter-in-law, Lasundra Gray of Manchester; devoted friend, Mark Scott of Gay.

William Andrew Fowler, Sr.
August 22, 1931 October 31, 2002
William Andrew Big William Fowler, Sr., 71, of Woodbury, passed away October 31 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted November 2 at Woodbury Baptist Church with Reverend Drew Corbett officiating, assisted by Reverend Scotty Fowler. Burial was at Woodbury City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Al Amerson, Bowman Brown, David Jones, John Rogers, Gene Newman, and Alton Halliday.
Mr. Fowler was born August 22, 1931 in Meriwether County, son of the late William B. and Estelle McRae Fowler. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation Surveying Crew, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a Baptist.
Survivors include one daughter, Tricia Fowler of Roswell; three sons, William A. Fowler, Jr. of Swanee, Jeffrey Fowler of Hogansville and Brian Fowler of Scranton, Pennsylvania; one sister, Willie Mae Napier of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; one brother, James L. Fowler of Austell; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Vera Rice Prater

Funeral services for Mrs. Vera Virginia Rice Prater, 76, were held October 30 at Weogufka, Alabama 2nd Baptist Church with the Reverend Danny Bynum, the Reverend Byron Golden and the Reverend Chuck Conner officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Born July 20, 1926 in Lakeland, Florida, Mrs. Prater died at Baptist Hospital South, Montgomery, Alabama on October 28. A homemaker, she was active in her church and community.
She is survived by three sons, G. Robert (Gloria) Prater of Warm Springs, David A. (Melissa) Prater of Newnan and Reuben M. (Patsy) Prater of Alexander City, Alabama; one daughter, Mary Prater Wood of Wetumpka, Alabama; four brothers, Douglas Rice of Prattville, Alabama, Elwood Rice of Florida, Vernon Rice and Allyn Rice, both of Lakeland, Florida; two sisters, Willie Kelley, of Lake Placid, Florida and Ila Tuck of Athens, Alabama; and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Mamie T. Braddy

Mrs. Mamie T. Braddy, 86, of Manchester, formerly of Woodland, died November 4 at her home. Graveside services were held November 6 at the Woodland Cemetery with Dr. Joe Hendricks officiating.
Mrs. Braddy was born November 20, 1915 in Talbot County, the daughter of Clyde and Irene S. Teal. She was a retired inspector with International Playtex in Manchester, and a member of the Woodland United Methodist Church. She was the widow of William Eugene Braddy and preceded in death by two brothers, Steve Teal and Richard Teal, and sister, Irene Teal Harper.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Ernest (Sharon) Braddy, Jr.; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Ernie (Kelly) Braddy and Keith (Sherry) Braddy; four great-grandchildren, Noah Blake Braddy, Allison Nichole Braddy, Justin Wayne Braddy and Morgan Nichole Conner; two sisters, Evelyn B. Teal and Edith T. Eubanks, all of Manchester.
Contributions in memory of Mrs. Braddy may be made to a favorite charity or hospice.

Mrs. Sarah Lorre Mann Barnet

Mrs. Sara Lorre Mann Barnet, 72, of College Park, died October 8 at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale due to injuries sustained in a hit and run car accident. Memorial services for Mrs. Barnet will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Barnet was born June 15, 1930 in Shiloh, the daughter of Sarah Delles Grant Mann and Jimmy C. Mann. She was retired from Southern Bell as a clerk, was a member of Old Shiloh Baptist Church and was the widow of L.H. Barnet.
She is survived by her brother, Jesse Mann of Alvaton; several nieces and nephews.

Willie C. Bedell

Willie C. Bedell, 68, of Woodland, died November 6. Funeral services were held November 9 at Flint River Baptist Church.
Mr. Bedell was born November 18, 1933, son of the late George and Rosie Bedell. He joined the Flint River Baptist Church at an early age.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Bedell of Woodland; six sons, Willie (Yvonne) Bedell of Twinsburg, Ohio, Mike (Tammy) Bedell of Atlanta, Waymon Bedell of Atlanta, Travis (Karen) Bedell of Thomason, Mickey Bedell of Woodland and Anthony (Valarie) Bedell of Manchester; four daughters, Vickie Prather of Woodland, Trudie (Stanley) Childs of Manchester, Marva Bedell-Harris of Lorain-Ohio and Tammy (Joseph) Jones of Ellerslie; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Olden Bedell and two sons, Olden Bedell and Ricky Bedell.

Leonard M. McKnight

Leonard M. McKnight, 80, of Pensacola, Florida, formerly of Manchester, died November 7 at Covenant Hospice Residence in Pensacola. Funeral services were held November 11 at Manchester First Baptist Church Chapel with the Reverend Craig Williamson officiating. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Thomas Bowen, Bill Bowen, Jimmy Lanier, John ODonnell, Virgil Barangan and Buddy Graham serving as pallbearers.
Mr. McKnight was born February 13, 1922 in Boliver County, Mississippi, son of the late Reba Golden Murphy McKnight and the late Leonard Stewart McKnight. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, retired from CSX Railroad in 1990 after 45 years of service, was a member of Manchester First Baptist Church, VFW, the United Transportation Union, and was a former member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Bowen McKnight of Pensacola; one daughter, Laura M. Barangan of Pensacola; son-in-law, Dr. Virgilio C. Barangan, also of Pensacola; one granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth ODonnell of Pensacola; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard M. McKnight, Jr. and a brother, Bryan F. McKnight.

Mrs. Ethel M. McPhail

Mrs. Ethel M. McPhail, 91, of Warm Springs, died November 11 at Molena Nursing Home. Funeral services will be conducted November 14 at 2 PM at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Manchester with the Reverend Gene Davis, pastor of Warm Springs United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Warm Springs City Cemetery.
Mrs. McPhail was born June 16, 1911 in Sasser, daughter of the late Lota OSteen McLendon and the late Claude McLendon. She was retired from the Meriwether County Juvenile Court Services Office, had worked at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation in the 1940s, was a member of Warm Springs United Methodist Church and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include one son, Pete C. McPhail and his wife Gail of Loganville; one grandson, Chris Denman of Monticello; one granddaughter, Michelle Tyre of Loganville; one great-granddaughter, Makenzie Tyre of Loganville. She was the widow of James W. McPhail Sr., and was also preceded in death by a son, James W. McPhail, Jr.

Mr. Blake Bartlett
May 31, 1913 November 14, 2002
Funeral services were held at 3 PM Sunday, November 17, from Woodland Baptist Church for Black Bartlett, 89, of Woodland, who passed away Thursday, November 14 at Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange following an illness of several months. Entombment was in Woodland City Mausoleum.
Mr. Bartlett, or Blake as he much preferred to be called, was born May 31, 1913 in Randolph County, Alabama, a son of the late James and Carrie Pittman Bartlett. He was retired as plant manager of Woodland Furniture Manufacturing Company.
Blake attended Jacksonville State University and in 1939 graduated from Auburn University where he received a degree in education. He taught school and served as a principal in Junior High Schools in Alabama. Schools in which he taught included those in Heilberger, in Perry County, Alabama, and Roanoke, Alabama.
Blake met a lifetime friend, John Woodall, while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. John persuaded his friend to come to Woodland after the war and help start Woodland Furniture Manufacturing Company.
Mr. Bartlett was a longtime member and Chairman of the Deacons at Woodland Baptist Church, where he also served as church treasurer, as well as serving on many various comities. He served as treasurer of Merritt Baptist Association, was a past president of the Meriwether County AARP Chapter, was a member of the American Legion, the Old Mill Club and was a former scoutmaster.
Blake was a very active member of the Manchester Kiwanis Club, where his work and almost weekly reports on the collection of cardboard will be missed. His Kiwanis Calendar Sales were around 100 or so year after year. He was a past Kiwanis board member, and a recipient of the clubs highest award, the George F. Hixon Award for 2002, which named him Kiwanian of the Year.
In addition to the above, Blake was very active in the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes fundraising efforts.
Blake was an avid golfer, usually playing at least two times each week with his friends and children, Beth and Lee. At age 89, he still walked many holes.
Mr. Bartlett was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Clara Lee, whom he looked after very devotedly during the failing years of her life; and a granddaughter, Lura Lee Bartlett.
His survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Beth Bartlett Lofton of Peachtree City; two sons, Benjamin Blake Bartlett of Woodland and Lee James Bartlett of Loganville; one sister, Mrs. Lucy Nell Keeble of LaGrange; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Reverend. Jimmy Cook and Reverend Charles Hill officiated the capacity crowd service and eulogies were given by Jim Collier, Reverend John Simmons, Lee Bartlett, and Blakes granddaughter, who is also named Blake Bartlett.

Mrs. Carrie Mae Brown Holmes

Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Mae Brown Holmes, 89, of Woodbury, who died November 12, at her residence, were held at 1 PM Saturday, November 16 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Reverend J.D. Walker officiating, assisted by Reverend Charles Parks. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Holmes was a life-long resident of Meriwether County and was a retired housekeeper.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leila Mae Copeland and Mrs. Mary (Henry Lee) Fuller, both of Woodbury; four sons, Mr. Willie C. (Annie C.) Holmes, Mr. Melvin (Ola Mae) Holmes and Mr. Dennis Holmes, all of Woodbury, and Mr. Wesley (Rebecca) Holmes of Greenville; one brother, Mr. Wisdom (Zula Mae) Brown of Manchester; one sister, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Henry of Woodbury; three grandchildren she raised as her own, Mrs. Josephine Holmes Mahone of Greenville, Mr. Ronnie (Annie) Whitehead and Mr. Kerry Holmes, all of Woodbury; 51 grandchildren; 100 great grandchildren and 31 great great-grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Mr. Billy Ray Bryant of Atlanta; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Delores Holmes of Greenville.
