MRS. FANNIE MAE MITCHELL
Mrs. Fannie Mae Mitchell, 87, of Manchester, died August 31 at Columbus Hospice. Funeral services were conducted September 2 in Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Carolyn Evans officiating, assisted by Reverend Dan Crawford. Burial was at Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were Bart Gibson, Joe Gibson, Ken Carter, Steve Raynor, John Dixon and Wayman Carlisle. Honorary pallbearers were Bucky Brown, John Harmon, John Parr, Lee Daniel, Jon Lanier, Jerry Taylor and Tony Tuttle.
Mrs. Mitchell was born October 6, 1913 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Rufus Chaney Hudgins and the late Martha Elizabeth Adkerson Hudgins. She was retired from Callaway Mills Co., and the Gift Shop of The Little White House, and was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Al Larson of Stone Mountain; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Lorine Mitchell of Manchester; two brother, R. C. Hudgins of LaGrange, Henry L. Hudgins of Ephesus, and Paul Hudgins of Jacksonville, Georgia; five grandchildren and spouses, Joe and Susie Gibson of Buford, Bart and Diana Gibson of Newnan, Elizabeth and Steve Raynor of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Marsha and Ken Carter of Marietta, and Christi and John Dixon of Ellerslie; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy L. Mitchell.

Deborah Lynn Thompson, 41, of Manchester, died August 31 at The Medical Center in Columbus. Graveside services were held September 3 at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Reverend Jimmy Chapman officiating, assisted by Reverend Doug Ledford. Serving as honorary pallbearers were employees of the Meriwether County 911 System, the Meriwether County EMS, and the Meriwether County Sheriffs Department.
Lynn was born March 1, 1960 in Warm Springs, daughter of Nancy Brown Thompson and the late Wayne Lamar "Joe" Thompson. She worked as a dispatcher for the Meriwether County 911 Emergency System and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother, Nancy Brown Thompson of Manchester; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Mike and Tammy Thompson of Griffin, and Matt Thompson of Nashville, Tennessee; several aunts and uncles; two nieces Lindsey and Abbey Thompson, both of Griffin.

Charles Seay, 80, of Fayetteville, passes away August 27 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were conducted August 29 at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend James Schwarzlose officiating. Burial was at Jones Chapel Cemetery in Woodbury.
Mr. Seay was born March 16, 1921 in Meriwether County, son of the late John William and Sinnie Knight Seay. He was retired from Southern Bell as a telephone installer, was a veteran of the US Navy, and was a member of Jones Chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae Odom Seay of Fayetteville; three daughters, Carol Baker, Renee Shipp, and Becky Voltz; one son, Ricky Seay; and several grandchildren.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Seay may be made to Jones Chapel Cemetery Fund.

Airman First Class Ocie Donovan Geter, 20, died August 18 in Sumter, South Carolina from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Memorial services were held August 26 at Cibolo Valley Baptist Church in Cibolo, Texas and August 30 at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. Interment was at Mulhearn Memorial Park in Monroe, Louisiana.
Mr. Geter was born at Shaw AFB October 5, 1981 and grew up in Monroe, Louisiana where he graduated from high school. In 2000 he moved to Converse, Texas with his father, Grady and joined the United States Air Force in January 2001. He completed his basic training at Lackland AFB and was then transferred to Shaw AFB. He was baptized at Cibolo Valley Baptist Church in Cibolo, Texas on November 5, 2000.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Grady and Diane Geter; stepsister, Leigh Stanford; many friends and the members of Cibolo Valley Baptist Church; his mother and stepfather, Debra and Doug Ahyo; grandmothers, Robert Jacks and Dovie Geter; sisters, Robert Huang, Naomi Geter and Patricia Geter; one nephew, Nickolas Huang; one niece, Gabrilla Romo. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Tim Jacks and Ocie Geter.

Mrs. Virginia Kelley, 75, of Manchester, died September 3, at Spalding Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held September 6 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Warm Springs City Cemetery. Dr. Bob Patterson officiated and serving as pallbearers were Tim Crawley, Jimmy Bartlett, Kevin Jones, Tim Nance, Billy Crawley and Tom Beddington.
Mrs. Kelley was born June 4, 1926 in Fulton County, daughter of the late Jim and Ella Crawley. She was a care giver for many families, a waitress for Holiday Inn for many years and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Shelia Marie Smith of Manchester; two sons, Johnny Kelley and Jim Porter Kelley, both of Griffin; one sister, Frances Phillips of Manchester; one brother, Wilson Crawley of Union City; eight grandchildren, Sheri Lynn Bartlett, Kimberly Owens, Rase Kelley, Jamie Kelley, Amanda Kelley, Michelle Nance, Misty Jones, Jessica Kelley; 11 great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Saralyn Claire Cannon Greene, 77, were held September 5 at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Interment was at Westview Cemetery.
Mrs. Greene was born December 13, 1924 in Oglethorpe County and her family moved to Warm Springs where she and her ten brothers and sisters grew up. She was educated at LaGrange College and worked tirelessly in the United Methodist Church across North Georgia in ministry with her husband, Dr. Reynolds W. Greene, Jr. For the last eight years, she was involved in many activities at the Mr. Vernon Towers, organizing weekly Vesper services for her fellow residents there. She belonged to the Rhododendron Club and other service clubs where she was always a source of delight.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Reynolds W. Greene, Jr., of Atlanta; children, Nancy and Julian Smiley of Knoxville, Laurence and Pat Greene of Lilburn, Stuart and Becky Greene of Conyers, Robyn and Scott Carroll of Dalton, Marcia and Tom Simpson of Marietta; grandchildren, Jes (Karen) and Claire Smiley, Saralyn and Robyn Greene, Tucker, Tim, and Tyler Greene, Jordan, Zach and Casey Carroll, Cannon, Claire and Joel Simpson; brothers, Fred Cannon of San Diego, California, Frank Cannon of Manchester, Wimberly Cannon of Sarasota, Florida; sisters, Martha Cannon of Warm Springs, Frances Frantz of Fresno, California and Betty Chloe Greiner of Marietta.

Norman King Carter, Sr., 84, died September 7. Funeral services were held September 10 at Talbotton Methodist Church with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Carter was born in Talbotton, son of the late Dr. And Mrs. Grady Carter. He was retired from the Department of Transportation. At age 21, Mr. Carter was elected Mayor of Talbotton, the youngest mayor in the United States at that time. He was an expert shot when it came to quail hunting, loved baseball, and always said that he could do most anything but make a living! However, this was another one of his many jokes.
After retiring, Mr. Carter and his wife, Mary Virginia, spent six months each year in Talbotton and six months in Sapphire Valley, North Carolina where they enjoyed gold, friends and fellowship. He won the annual "Gentleman of the Year" golf award at Sapphire Valley.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Virginia Carter; one son and daughter-in-law, Norman Carter, Jr., and Jane Carter; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mattie Estella Hough Hardnett, 89, died August 31 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral services were held September 6 at Concord Baptist Church in Woodland with Reverend H. G. Ellison officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hardnett was born April 4, 1912 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Jim and Alberta Hough. She was a faithful member of Church of God of Christ in Manchester.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Hardnett, Jr., of Manchester; one son, James (Gwen) Hardnett of Manchester; a daughter-in-law, Diane Hardnett, also of Manchester; one sister, Lula Bell Reese of Loraine, Ohio; ten grandchildren, DeWandalyn, Dwayne (Melanie), Michael, Dyane, Candace, Jalessa, Teresa, Shannon Bowman, Derrick Odums; six great grandchildren; a host of caring nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. One daughter, Theresa and one son, Wayne, preceded her in death. Three sisters and five brothers also preceded her in death.

John Stephen "Steve" Darnell, 80, of Woodbury died at his residence on Monday, September 10, 2001.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, September 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Meriwether Memory Gardens in Manchester with the Reverend Ernie Hinson officiating.
Steve was born in Emerson on June 18, 1921, the son of John Stephen Darnell and Annie Newell Newman Darnell. A US Navy Veteran of World War II and Korea, he was the retired owner of NAPA Auto Parts Stores in Manchester, Thomaston and Cartersville.
He was a Baptist and was a member of the Thomaston Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 81.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Pryor Darnell, Woodbury; one daughter, Deidre Ann Darnell of Woodbury; one stepson, Jefferey Harris of Doraville; one stepdaughter, Janet Loyd of Fayetteville; two brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Sadie Darnell of Emerson and Virgil and Nellie Darnell of Mableton; one sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Manson Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; and a very dear pet Beagle names "Cookie."

Orville Bryan Perkins, 91, of Williamson, died Monday, September 10, 2001 at the Christian Ministry Hospice in Griffin. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of the Smith-Steel-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester on Wednesday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. Gary Holloway officiated, assisted by Dan Jarrett. Burial followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Mark Holloway, John Holloway, Brent Holloway, Bill Holloway, Blake Holloway, and Brian Holloway serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Perkins was born in Wayne County, Kentucky on January 28, 1910, the sone of Lige Perkins and Rosa Bates Perkins. He was a preacher of the Gospel and a member of West Side Church of Christ in Griffin.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Raleigh Holloway of Williamson; three sisters, Lena Floyd of Indiana, Zula Davis and Nannie Bell of Monticello, Kentucky; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Tater Perkins, and daughter, Ruth Perkins.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with Reverend T. P. Hadley officiating. Burial followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens.
Mr. Gilson was born July 25, 1925 in Talbot County, Georgia, the son of the late William Mangrum Gilson and Mary Harris Gilson. A US Army veteran of World War II serving on Co. C. 865th Engineering Aviation Battalion, he was the retired owner of G & K Automotive. Mr. Gilson was a Baptist, Deacon and former Councilman in Talbotton.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Tomlin Gilson of Manchester; sons and daughter-in-law, Dana Gilson of Manchester, Bobby & Sherry Gilson of Pine Mountain, and John & Amy Gilson of Manchester; two brothers, Ralph Gilson of Woodbury and Ben Gilson of Talbotton; two sisters, Maidie Ligon of Talbotton and Mary Parten of Newnan; and two grandsons, Thomas Christopher Gilson (Tom) and Robert Benjamin Gilson (Ben).

Mrs. Marcus was born February 2, 1946 in Meriwether County, the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Mary Lou Bulloch. She was the manager of the Seafood Department at Cub Foods and was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Paul A. Marcus of Riverdale; one daughter, Judy Childree of Raleigh; one son, Wade Reese of Daleville, Alabama; 2 stepdaughters, Sandra Marcus and Christine Marcus of Jonesboro; one stepson, James Marcus of Jonesboro; three sisters, Gloria Weaver of Summerset, Kentucky, Naomi Jones of Woodbury, and Debbie Jean Kirts of Manchester; two brothers, Bennie Bulloch and Maxie G. Bulloch of Manchester; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Virginia Godfrey (Mrs. Pete) Mathews, 93, of Greenville, died Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs.
The funeral service was conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 11, at the graveside in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in the Rocky Mount Community of Meriwether County. The Reverend Jonathan Porter officiated.
Mrs. Mathews was born January 19, 1908, in Rocky Mount, daughter of the late James David Godfrey and the late Cora Hodge Godfrey. She had lived in Greenville since 1934, where she had been a leader in civic and religious activities. She was a member of the Greenville Baptist Church, the W.M.U. and the Womens Bible Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jane Morrison of Greenville and Mrs. Vivian Pettigrew of Jonesboro; two granddaughters, Anise Morrison of LaGrange and Carole Anne and Darin Harper of McDonough; and one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Ann Harper of McDonough. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.O. (Pete) Mathews, her infant daughter, Anise Mathews and her son-in-law, George E. Morrison, Jr.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Owens, 79, passed away September 8. Funeral services were conducted September 13 from Calvary Baptist Church in Manchester with the Reverend J.A. Matthews officiating. Interment followed at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Owens was born November 29, 1921 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Eddie R. Mahone and Jeanie King. She was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Rosa Milling and uncle, the late Will Milling.
At an early age she joined the Calvary Baptist Church. After graduating from high school in 1941 she went to school in Atlanta where she became a licensed cosmetologist and retired to Manchester as the first black cosmetologist. She worked as a school crossing guard and later as a server at International Playtex, Inc., until she retired. She remained active in the church where she was a member of the Sunshine Club. She was also very active in the community and was instrumental in getting recreational facilities for the community. More recently she serves as a member of the Meriwether County Board of Family and Children Services.
Survivors include a loving and devoted mother, Rosa Milling of Manchester; a loving and devoted daughter, Barbara O. Lightfoot of Augusta; two granddaughters, Yolanda P. Lightfoot of Atlanta and Rosalyn L. Ajigbeda (Tunji) of Lithonia; three great grandchildren; four sisters, Louise Barnes of Manchester, Julia Meriwether and Pearline Carter of Columbus, and Thelma Green of Atlanta; two brothers, Jonas Mahone of Talbotton, and Fred Mahone of Chicago; a loving and devoted niece, Dorothy V. Harris (Ed) of Manchester; other nieces and nephews, a goddaughter, Fannie Talmadge (Ronald) of Hamilton Square, New Jersey; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Owens.

Master Byers was born December 3, 1997 in Columbus, son of Karen Lynn Cook Byers and Frank Edward Byers of Warm Springs.
Survivors, other than his parents, include two sisters, Kristy Lynn Byers and Melody Diana Byers; one brother, Frank E. Byers, Jr.; and a paternal grandmother, Charlene Byers, all of Warm Springs.

Mr. Carpenter was born September 23, 1974 in Barberton, Ohio, a son of Ronald G. Carpenter and Charlotte House Carpenter. He worked for Jones General Contractor in Woodbury, and was a member of Olaton Baptist Church in Olaton, Kentucky.
Survivors include his father, Ron Carpenter of Woodbury; mother, Charlotte H. Carpenter of Cadiz, Kentucky; one daughter, Chloe Carpenter and one son, Colton Carpenter, both of Medina, Ohio; the mother of his children, Victoria Chaye, also of Medina, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Todd and Paula Carpenter of Cadiz, Kentucky; nieces, Christina Carpenter and Rachael Carpenter; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Horace Daniel Minniefield, Jr., 51, passed away September 13 at The Medical Center in Columbus. Funeral services were held September 20 at Leverett Hill Baptist Church in Warm Springs with Reverent Tracy Neal officiating.
Mr. Minniefield was born March 27, 1946 in Meriwether County, a son of the late Mrs. Katie Mae Minniefield and Horace D. Minniefield, Sr. He joined the Leverette Hill Baptist Church at an early age. During his lifetime he was a mason. He retired from Warm Springs Roosevelt Institute with 22 years of faithful service.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Minniefield of Warm Springs; 14 children, Mrs. Lois (Samuel) Williams, Ms. Lawanda, Ms. LaTonja, Alexander, Kevin, Jamie, Garry Minnniefield, all of Warm Springs; Mrs. Bernice (Marcus) Prather, Octavia (Alvin) Martin, Stephanie (Larry P, Willie (Javonda) Minniefield, all of Manchester; Sandra Williams of Miami, Florida, John and Joshua Wiliams of Augusta; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Inell Jenkins; three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Mrs. Nora L. Harris, Mrs. Inez (Tommy) Carter, Mrs. Lizzie Mae, Hubbard, Charles, Joe Jenkins, all of Warm Springs; 11 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

MISS FLORA MAE HAYNES

Miss Flora Mae Haynes, 79, of Manchester, formerly of Talladega, Alabama died September 21 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held September 24 at Coosa Valley Cemetery in Cropwell, Alabama, according to Cox Funeral Home in Manchester.
Miss Haynes was born July 2, 1922 in Talladega County, Alabama, daughter of the late Daisy and Lonnie Haynes. She was a member of the Weslian Methodist Church in Talladega, had worked for the Talladega Mills as a winder, and had lived in Manchester for the past three years.
Survivors include her sister, Ruth M. Pruitt of Manchester; three nephews, Raymond M. Haynes of Port Royal, South Carolina, Johnnie Doyle Haynes and Don Earl Haynes, both of Talladega, Alabama.
