When we would call in helicopters to pick us up or to mark our position, we would ignite a colored smoke grenade and call out over the radio the color popped.  Then after the chopper confirmed spotting the color we would toss another different color and the chopper would come back confirming the second color we had tossed.  It was done this way so Charlie could not pop the same color smoke  and the chopper go into a trap.
