Camp Facilities

As regular PSSG attenders can attest, we've located a facility that seems to have all that we need for good creature comforts as well as even darker skies -- and its pricing is compatible with our needs. It's called WhiteWater Express High Adventure Camp & Retreat Center and it's just inside Tennessee, a few miles north of McCaysville, Georgia/Copperhill, Tennessee (near Ducktown, Tennessee). The facility is owned and operated by an Atlantan who himself wanted to share open country and dark skies with others, so he started WhiteWater Express.

Besides the PSSG activities, WhiteWater Express offers horseback riding, rafting on the Ocoee River, hiking, mountain biking, repelling and more. These features are separate from the PSSG and you should contact WhiteWater Express on your own to arrange in advance use of them. The phone number is 404-325-5295 or 1-800-676-7238.

WhiteWater Express is located on U.S. Hwy 64/74 East, just west of the North Carolina state line and features the following:

  • Indoor lodging -- Bunkhouses and cabins with bunkbeds and similar arrangements (Men and women will be assigned separate quarters; we will also try to accommodate families in separate lodging as well. NO semiprivate rooms.) This building includes three bunk rooms downstairs . . .

. . . plus an outside stairway to more sleeping quarters upstairs.

Here's a view of one of the downstairs bunk rooms . . .

. . . plus a few of the bunk room next to it.

. . . plus a view of the upstairs bunk room. (Love that cathedral ceiling, don't ya?)

  • Outdoor lodging -- Vehicle or tent camping right on the observing field (sorry, no pix available, but just wait 'til next year!).

  • Shower and toilet facilities in buildings separate from the bunkhouses and cabins

  • A pavilion-style crafts building for indoor workshops and vendor displays. Located off the south end of the field, it's very easy to get to.

  • Inside, there's electrical outlets, a staging area, plus plenty of floor space for tables and demonstrations.

  • A dining hall for those who have prepaid for meals

  • A separate presentation building for the Friday and Saturday talks.

As with the workshops building, the presentation hall features staging areas and plenty of floor space plus bleacher seats. The building walls will be closed in for the PSSG.

Like we said, plenty of space.

  • A humongous observing field for PSSG use, as shown by this composite view of about 270 degrees. We estimate that up to 500 persons may set up on this field.
