 Introduction

Since its inception in December 1986, Safe House has been a haven of safety in which victims of physical and severe emotional abuse can live, learn, change, grow and heal. Clients' identities and the shelter location are kept confidential to ensure, as much as possible, that those we serve will not have to endure additional abuse, harassment, and embarrassment. Because the majority of clients that we serve are women being abused by a male partners, we refer to victims as "she/her" and to abusers as "he/him", however, the services we offer are the same for male and female victims. A victim does not fall into any catagory based on sexual, religious, racial, socio-economic, age, marital, or ethnic status, because of this our program does not use such criteria as a determinant of qualification/disqualification of services.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help domestic violence victims to accept and overcome their own victimization. We teach our clients that they have the power over their own decisions and they have the right to not be abused. We will stress from the beginning that a victim who is sheltered through our program or participates in our support groups, has the option and power to make her own decisions. We support a victim to return to or stay in a relationship only when it is safe for her and her children. Safe House's mission is not to break up families, but to help stop abuse in families. Sometimes, separation, either on a temporary or permanent basis, is the only solution. We do not condemn a woman's decision to return to the situation, but encourage her to use our services again if she needs them. We reinforce her right NOT to take responsibility for his abusive behavior or for changing his behavior. Safe House recognizes the the potential for empowerment inherent in support groups and informal discussions among individuals who have been victimized through domestic violence. We encourage anyone being abused to seek help whether it be through our services or services through another shelter.
