Predictions for the U.S. economy – 2009-2010

For many Americans, questions regarding the financial health of our country dominate our thoughts. We are wondering when the economy will start showing signs of improvement, when employment will return to healthy levels, and when the housing market will stabilize. When will manufacturing jobs experience a rebirth?

Although I am not an economist, I do have the luxury of insight into one of the charts of the U.S. that astrologers consider valid – the time of birth of our country, at 5:10 p.m. on July 4, 1776 – known as the Sibley chart. So here are my humble projections as to what I see for us as a nation.

The first signs of good news should occur the latter 11 days of July of 2009, as retrograde Jupiter conjuncts the cusp of the 3rd House of the natal Sibley chart, and at the same time creating a conjunction to solar arc Venus. These days a significant decline in the rate of people filing for unemployment or those who have lost jobs is defined as positive news. I anticipate this to be such a time.

The second week of August, as Jupiter moves to 22 degrees Aquarius and conjuncts progressed Mercury, ruler of the 7th House, is an excellent time for significant progress with respect to negotiations for the automobile industry.

During November and December 2009, as Uranus semi-sextiles progressed Mercury, we can anticipate small glimpses of good news regarding innovative advancements in this industry. Perhaps we’ll see announcements that manufacturing plants are making major progress as they retool for the next generation of fuel efficient cars.

The second to last week of August, Jupiter occupies 21 degrees of Aquarius, trining (making a 120 degree aspect to) natal Mars, ruler of 4th and 5th Houses, indicating an improvement in sales of home purchases.

As the Moon’s north node transits over natal Pluto this September, this may be defined, in hindsight, as the technical end of the recession. The economy shows greater signs of life and appears to be resuscitating itself.

Expect tests of diplomacy in the second and third weeks of November 2009 and also mid-March 2010 as Saturn, ruler of 2nd House of finances, transits over our natal Midheaven (MC). Perhaps President Obama will take a harder stand on dealing with major corporations and their excesses. Further diplomatic moves will be imperative early in August 2010 as Saturn completes its conjunction to our MC.

By the end of December 2009, as Jupiter moves back into the 3rd House, we may be looking at the start of significant improvements in roads, with bridges coming in January and February of next year as Jupiter goes into Pisces. Also, those newspapers that will ultimately survive may expand their electronic presence. Perhaps this marks the beginning of the era when paying for journalism services will be commonplace, as the newspaper industry attempts to recoup the losses incurred by the gradual decline of print journalism.

If I’m not mistaken, I believe there is a theory that suggests that however goes January, so goes the year regarding the stock market. With Jupiter conjunct the natal moon at the opening of the year, this portends a positive opening. Jupiter moves back over its solar arc position the 2nd week of January 2010. As Jupiter enters Pisces it starts making a conjunction to our progressed and solar arc sun at 5 Pisces, the sun ruling the 9th House. Could we see broader international relationships emerging? Perhaps we’ll see a show of compassion and a release of political prisoners.

Next year, housing improves in May and June as Uranus and Jupiter conjunct the natal IC (4th House cusp or Nadir). As Jupiter hits the IC between the 14th and 23rd of June we should see a good spike. Uranus comes within a degree of the IC in late May through mid-August, reinforcing the potential for a sudden and perhaps unexpected burst of activity in home sales. Jupiter conjuncts the IC either exactly or within a couple of degrees between early June and early September, making this another good window for the housing market.

The president has indicated his desire to have something on his desk within the next couple of months regarding health care reform. It is feasible that some reforms will be in place as early as January of next year, when Pluto creates its next exact opposition to natal Venus, ruler of the 6th House of health care. This has the potential to be the first series of adjustments that will be implemented regarding the shifting of employers’ role in providing health insurance benefits. If there are to be incremental steps, further steps could be implemented between July and November 2010. This cycle, when Pluto creates this last opposition to Venus, should signal the time when the government rids itself of its ownership in companies such as GM and the like.

The last poor employment numbers could surface in June and July 2010, as Saturn completes its in-conjunct to the natal moon.

The next round of good news will come at the end of 2010, into January 2011 as Pluto opposes natal Jupiter. We should see the emergence of a more prosperous and rejuvenated country where our assets are able to work for us. Look for improved international relationships to occur between July and Nov of 2011. An increased number of allies rally to our side. We can anticipate the beginning of a trend of major companies bringing jobs back to the U.S., further improving employment and the economy in general. Might this be a response to the government’s creation of adequate incentives for companies to return to their home turf?

During October 2011 the progressed Ascendant enters Virgo. We should see a healthier nation emerging physically and anticipate vast improvements in government efficiency, especially regarding health care and our educational system. Expect significant advancements as these industries make considerable headway into the wireless era.

In May 2012, transiting Jupiter conjuncts the 6th House, portending healthy employment numbers. This may be the closest we’re going to get to full employment.

If it turns out that Obama’s recent appeal to the Muslim world does result in some major geopolitical changes, we’ll see a more obvious impact from those efforts at the beginning of January 2010, when Jupiter conjuncts the natal moon.

That’s my opinion. We welcome yours!
