My First Lathe Cut Threads
(Added 02/08/1999)
Ronald Thibault

The picture shows the first "operational" thread I ever cut on a lathe. It is a 5/8 -11 thread and the piece will be part of my new boring bar holder. I had originally planed to use a die, but after getting a $30 price quote from the local industrial supply house, I decided to take the plunge.

One factor that led to the successful completion of the thread was that I used an indexable insert toolholder, rather than the worthless 1/4" brazed carbide bits that had kept breaking off in the work during my attempts to thread a practice bar!
