A view of the lake at Greenbrier State Park Maryland as preparations are made for the first sortie of the 97 NE Spring Regionals.

(From back to front) Steve Pavlovsky's Maryland and Marty Hayes' Warspite close on Frank Pittelli and Nathan Blattau's Bacon Makers (actually Nathan was using Will Montgomery's boat pending completion of his own Yamato).

Marty had brought his Nagato to battle with and had been named the Axis Imperial Admiral when he was laid low with mechanical problems. He broke out the venerable Warspite and fought on the Allied side instead. Here he is prepping the Warspite for battle.

This close-up shows the damage received by Tom Tanners Massachusetts in its first battle sortie.  NOTE: The deck is not damaged, just moved during repair.

Danny Schultz's post-Pearl Harbor version of the Maryland takes center stage here while Steve Pavlovsky prepares his pre-Pearl version for battle. To the rear Will Montgomery prepares the Musashi for its first outing.

Mus01.jpg (16892 bytes)

This was during the melee phase when it was time for "Smear the Musashi". Easier said than done. Here Nathan Blattau eats a few from the forward sidemounts of the Musashi. By this time Will was having a few glitches. He had already had a small electrical fire Saturday from the amount of current the Musashi was drawing (over 30 amps I think) and now was starting to have a some radio problems. If you look by the stern turret you'll see it is firing as well as a result of one of these "glitches". Frank Pittelli's Veribus Unitis us closing to use its forward firing gun while Steve Pavlovsky's Maryland pumps out in the background.

Mus02.jpg (15208 bytes)

Steve Pavlovsky puts the Maryland between the a rock and a hard place, maneuvering in for a shot on Frank Pattelli's Veribus Unitis while Will Montgomery's Musashi closes to use her QUAD sidemounts. Notice how clear the water is. Even if you sank in four foot of water you could still see an outline of your boat from the surface (as Danny, Tom, and a few others found out the hard way).

Ali Zinat and John Messere prepare the North Carolina and the Invincible, while between and behind them sits Joe Volare's Roma. Tom found their work stands to be a great idea and intends to build one for himself. Ali's backup boat, the Lutzow, is by his left knee.

Marty Hayes' Warspite closes in on Steve Pavlovsky's Maryland and opens fire with B turret. Neither ship is pumping which leads me to believe this is early in the first sortie. The Maryland's 75 round X turret is just coming to bear on the Warspite's bow and looks ready to do some damage.  Note the BB splash hard on the Maryland's stern!!

War_ax01.jpg (12757 bytes)

Marty Hayes' Warspite has seeming trapped an entire Axis squadron by the shore in this shot. Actually taken during the melee, I think Mike Blattau's Scharnhorst (four stacked gray boat at the bottom) came in to use her stern mounts on someone and grounded, Frank followed for some reason, and drew the Warspite and Nathan Blattau's Svent Ivan (sp?) in.
