John Hammerton

A man of talent and of considerable civil distinction in the Colony. In 1732 he was the Receiver General of His Majesty's Quit Rents, and in 1734, the Secretary of the Colony. In 1738 he was appointed Register and Secretary of South Carolina for life.

Son of Thomas Smith, born 1718. Member Assembly 1748-62, Speaker 1755, 1760, 1762. Associate Justice Common Pleas 1766. Died at Newport, R.I., July 28, 1770, buried Trinity Church, Newport, R. I. Portrait by Theus in James S. Givves' Memorial Art Gallery, Charleston.
