Descendants of William D. Mosely

Third Generation

14. Emory Crawford Mosley (William J. , William D. ) was born Jan 1846 or 47 in Georgia. He died in 1912 in South Pittsburg, TN and was buried in 1912 in South Pittsburg, TN.

Emory's location right after 1880 is unclear. Relatives of Viola Mosley believe that the family lived near LaGrange Ga for some time. Family history of Salonia's relatives have Emory farming near Lebanon, Alabama and later running a hotel in Rising Fawn, Georgia. There are three Lebanons in Alabama but only two of them seem likely. Both of these are near the Georgia border. One Lebanon is in Cleburne County,AL about halfway between LaGrange, GA and Rising Fawn, GA. The other is in Dekalb County, AL which borders Dade County, GA (location of Rising Fawn). His wife Cynthia Pricilla Parrish died in Lebanon about 1883 and is believed to be buried there.

Emory remarried to a Mary (last name unknown) about 1884. Mary had three children by a previous marriage. Emory and Mary had one child William while in Alabama. They then moved to Rising Fawn about 1886 where Emory ran a hotel. The other three children by this second marriage were born in Rising Fawn. About 1897 they decided to go to Texas but got to Oklahoma and stayed. He "homesteaded" land there. None of the children by the first marriage went with Emory and Mary to Oklahoma.

Emory was affiliated with the Masons. He died in South Pittsburg, Tennessee while visiting his children from his first marriage. It is believed that he is buried at South Pittsburg.

6) Family history.

Emory married (1) Cynthia Priscilla Parish, daughter of Samuel J. Parish and Margaret Brown?. Cynthia was born about 1846 in Georgia. She died in 1883.

Cynthia is believed to be the daughter of Samuel J. and Margaret Brown Parrish but this has not been verified. Family records indicate that Sam Parrish was one of Salonia Mosley's grandfathers.

Nothing much is known about her. In family oral history she is characterized as being smart, worked hard, took care of her family and "was the best person there ever was".

She died about 1883 in Lebanon, Alabama at the age of 36 and is believed to be buried there. Her cause of death is not known but one son (Robert) was born 1883 and it is possible that she died while giving birth to this child.

Emory and Cynthia had the following children:

29 F i Salonia Iberia(Lone) Mosely was born on Jul 27 1871. She died on Feb 4 1952 in South Pittsburg, TN and was buried in Beene Cemetery, So Pittsburg Tn.

Salonia and Charles Travis Ross were married in Rising Fawn, Georgia. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Prater of the Southern Methodist Church. In attendance was Captain Winston Hale.

They resided at first in Richard City, Tn near what is now the Richard Hardy Memorial School. Water was carried from the foot of the hill in cedar buckets by the residents of that area for both home use and for the school. Wash day was also held at the spring and was a sort of get-together affair where neighborhood gossip was engaged.

When Salonia died in 1952, the South Pittsburg local paper carried an editorial praising her as a faithful Christian, strong in her faith and exhibiting joy in life. The editor remembered her shouting with joy at revival meetings and giving faithful witness during her latter years when she was too ill to leave her home.

Note: Double cousins. Salonia's mother-in-law was Hettie Brown. Salonia's sister married Columbus Brown, brother of Hettie. This produced many "double cousins" between the Mosley desendants and the Browns.
Salonia married Charles Travis Ross, son of Charles Ross and Hettie Brown, on Jun 8 1888 in Rising Fawn, Georgia. Charles was born on Apr 28 1866 in Tennessee. He died on Aug 28 1925 in South Pittsburg, TN and was buried in Beene Cemetery, So Pittsburg Tn.

Charles was born either near Ross's Landing (Chattanooga) or in Guild, Tn.(which is now Haletown). According to family history, Charles Sr. would carry Charles around in a grocery basket to "show off the baby".

When Charles was a teenager, his mother remarried and Charles left home to make his own way. He traveled to Copenhagen, Tn (now Richard City) where he hired himself out to Dick Kirkpatrick. He was well cared for and given some schooling during the years that he stayed with this family. He was treated more as a son than a hired hand.

Later he worked on a farm for Mr. Cureton near Bridgeport, Alabama. When Mr. Cureton moved to Rising Fawn, Georgia, Charles went with him and worked for him there.

It was in Rising Fawn that he met and married Salonia. They made their home in Richard City and then South Pittsburg. He worked for the Denman and Irondale Store and at the Pipe Foundry. Charles and family appear in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. In 1920, he was working as a night watchman in the cement plant at Richard City, Tennessee.

They had no children but Alice had five girls by a previous marriage. Charles was living in New Orleans in 1944.
