12. James MCCONNELL (William , Wilson ) was born in 1846 in Indiana. He died in 1922 in Battle Creek, Tn and was buried in Gilliam Cemetery-Battle Creek.
According to an article in the October 29,1996 Jasper Journal (Jasper, TN) quoting James's obituary, James and Lois "moved to this country from Indiana". That may be true but they made other stops along the way. Their son, William Josiah was born in Pierson, Michigan as was daughter Myra. Harry was born either in Kentucky or Tennessee . Son Edison was born in Kentucky per the 1920 census.
In the 1880 census, James and Lois are living in Piermont, Michigan with son Will(William Josiah) and baby daughter Myria. They had one female servant, Lizzie Kent age 18. They lived next door to James' father and mother (William and Abigal) now in their 60's with no servant. James is shown as a flour miller.
According to family records there was an accident at the flour mill which destroyed it and James took his family to the South. His wife's family were much opposed to the move. Not only were they moving very far away but to the rebellious South as well. As a small child, we visited some of our Towne relatives in Michigan. One was a very old lady who was bedridden. I remember being told that she did not much like Southerners.
James and family first came to Tennessee about 1885. They settled in McMinnville, TN(per letters from Lois McConnell to Mary Jane Marine).
The next stop on the journey appears to be Beattyville, Ky. I have a picture of my grandfather, William Josiah taken in Beattyville. He appears to be 16-17 years old at the time. They were in Kentucky in 1887, as evidenced by a letter from James to his sister Mary Jane, and remained there until at least May 1896 as Edison was born there. At some point they may have been in Virginia as James's letter mentions a mill which he owns there.
After they left Kentucky, they went to the Mobile, Alabama area. By this time Jame's work was running a sawmill.
From Alabama they moved to White County, TN. There my grandfather married Ollie Bell Wallace from Sparta.
Also there was another stop along the way. William Josiah's son Claude was born in Sherwood, TN in Franklin County. From Franklin, County they moved across the mountian through Swedens (Swettens) Cove to Kelly Cove on Battle Creek. The family oral history is that they moved the sawmill operation several times between until they reached Battle Creek, Tn. sometime after 1910. They had to move often to find timber.
From Kelly Cove they moved to their final destination on Battle Creek where one of the old homeplace's still exists and is presently occupied by Sally Beene (daughter of Maude McConnell Goff).
The Jasper Journal article describes James, and his son's William Josiah, Harry and Edison Lee as "prominent lumbernen in the Battle Creek Community".
James married Lois Marana TOWNE, daughter of Josiah Duncan TOWNE and Anna Eliza ABRAMS. Lois was born in 1853 in New York. She died in 1930 in Battle Creek, Tn and was buried in Gilliam Cemetery-Battle Creek.
Lois's father was born in New Hampshire and her mother in New York.
James and Lois had the following children:

Wilson and Mollie had the following children:
59 F i Mabel MCCONNELL was born about 1876 in Pierson, Michigan.
Mabel is in the 1880 Montcalm Co., MI census age 4 born in Michigan. She does not appear with her family in the 1900 census. At this point it is not known whether she died or was married prior to 1900.+ 60 F ii Grace MCCONNELL
14. Ada Maria MCCONNELL (William , Wilson ) was born in Sep 1851 in Elkhart County Ind. She died in 1932 in Pierson, Mich.
Maria McConnell and Sherman Bush lived in Pierson, Michigan (1880 and 1900 census). She is listed in the 1880 census as Ada M. In that census there are two children shown - Edna and Mary A. There is no record of a child named Mary in CGO's records so it is likely that she died young. In 1880, Sherman and Maria had one servant(18year old female-name undecipherable). Maria was buried in the Pierson Township, Mich cemetery..no birth date given, died May 3, 1932. The tombstone actually reads Maria Ada Bush. Sherman Bush is buried there also.
Ada married Sherman E BUSH in Kent Co, MI. Sherman was born in Nov 1845. He died estimated 1902 in Pierson, Mich.
Sherman's parents were born in Connecticut. His occupation is shown as an agent for farm implements in the 1900 census.

Mary married Charles Rodney MARINE, son of Charles W. MARINE and Anna MCCLOUD, on 13 Feb 1869 in Elkhart Co, IN. Charles was born about 1841 in Michigan. He died in 1886 in Michigan.
It is believed that Charles is buried in the Pierson Cemetery, Pierson, MI. The transcription of the tomstone reads:
C. R. Marine 3/23/1886 ae 15/5/5. The "15" is apparently in error and should be "45".His death was the result of a train hitting the milk wagon which he was driving. This accident happened in early February 1886. There was an article in the "Democrat" (believed to be the Grand Rapids Democrat) on Thursday, February 4, 1886. I have not found copy of the article as yet. A letter to Mary Jane Marine referring to the article implies that the accident was not immediately fatal as apparently reported in the original newspaper article.
Charles and Mary had the following children:
+ 65 M i Clyde W. MARINE
16. Thomas MCCONNELL (Joseph , Wilson ) was born in 1836 in Goshen, Indiana. He died in 1918.
Served as 1st Lt. Co. B 63 Indiana Infantry in the Civil War, fought at the Battle of New Orleans and was wounded. At some point he and/or his decendants moved to Sunset, Texas per CGO.

Maria married Louis LADAUER on 8 Aug 1870 in Elkhart Co, IN. Louis was born on 24 Feb 1846. He died on 7 Feb 1930.
They had the following children:
32. Allen MCCONNELL (John , Wilson ) was born on 2 Dec 1846 in Kosciusko Co., In. He died on 6 Apr 1907 in Mayville, Or.
Allen served in the Civil War and was incarcerated at Andersonville prison for three months. The conditions there were quite harsh. According to family history, he survived the ordeal only to suffer the rest of his life from digestive problems. Corn meal was the only dietary staple available to the prisoners incarcerated there and probably accounts for the problems he developed.
According to family history, he had trouble staying awake as a guard and was befriended by an older solder, Mr. Wickliffe. Wickliffe would take Allen's place when he was assigned night duty. After the war, Wickliffe showed up at Allen's home and demanded that he be given one of the twin baby daughters as repayment for his kindness during the war. Apparently, he and his wife were childless. Needless to say, they didn't give up their daughter, but they did give their son John a middle name of Wickliffe.
After Allen's first wife Mary Farrell died, Allen and his brother William (whose young wife had also died) moved to Oregon.
There is a record of Allen's Civil War pension. He began drawing it on Oct 15, 1892. After July 9, 1907, the pension was paid to his widow Laura McConnell residing in Oregon.
Allen married (1) Mary FARRELL about 1871.
Mary Farrell died either at the birth of her daughter Maggie or shortly thereafter.

John married Millie Margaret ADAMS on 29 Mar 1877 in Praire City, Iowa. Millie was born on 2 Feb 1859 in Greenbush, Illinois. She died in Nov 1946 in Washington Co., Reedville, Oregon.
Millie's parents were David Adams and Lucy Coleman. David was born Apr 1828, OH -died Nov 10, 1922. Lucy was born abt 1838, IL. Millie's siblings were Hanson Lycurgus b.abt 1855 IA; Henrietta (Etta) b.abt 1858 IL; Effie b. abt 1862 IL; and Mary b. abt 1864 IL. David and Lucy apparently moved from Illinois shortly after 1850 to Hardin County, Iowa (Union Township). Lucius was born there about 1855, then shortly thereafter the family moved back to Illinois. I have not been able to follow this family through all their moves but they eventually end up back in Hardin Co, IA by 1870 (Clay Twp, page 368). David's father (David Sr.) is shown on page 367 living with his daughter Charity and her husband E. B. Wilcox.
In 1880 Millie is married to John McConnell. They are shown in the Thayer Co, Nebraska census page 139C. Hanson L. Adams , Millie's brother is living with them along with their first child Jessie and Allen McConnell's two boys - Frank and Edward.
John and Millie had the following children:
35. William MCCONNELL (John , Wilson ) was born on 13 Oct 1848. He died on 29 May 1885 in Mayville, Gilliam Co., OR.
After Viola died, their children were placed with Viola's parents who were living in Polk Co., Iowa. William and his brother Allen moved to Oregon by way of Colorado. William was sick when they left but was cured by the time they reached Oregon. There he founded the town of Mayville and originally named it "Clyde".
William married (1) Viola STREET on 29 Dec 1870. Viola was born about 1851 in IN. She died about 1878/1880.

William also married (2) Phoebe Mary PERRIN RIPPEY about 1881 in Oregon. Phoebe was born on 15 Mar 1850 in Jasper County, Iowa. She died on 15 Jul 1938 in Coos Bay, Oregon.
Phoebe's first husband was John Rippey (b. Apr 21, 1844 in Indiana - Died Oct 16, 1875 in Indiana). They were married on Dec 4, 1867 in Jasper Co., Iowa. the children of John and Phoebe were:
George C. (b. 1868, IA - died May 12, 1925 in Portland, OR)
Laura Dell (b. Jul 8, 1871)
Jesse (b. Oct 2, 1872 - died 1874
Mary E. (b. Apr 22, 1874 in Iowa)John was a Civil War Veteran and fought in the Battle of Champion Hill.
After Phoebe's second husband William died, Phoebe married Edward Stinchfield about 1888. Apparently they had only one child, Fred born about 1889. Pheobe(now Stinchfield) began receiving John Rippey's veteran pension on Dec 4, 1889
William and Phoebe had the following children:
105 F iii Maude MCCONNELL was born about 1882. Maude married JARVIS.
36. William Wilson MCCONNELL III (Wilson , Wilson ) was born on 14 Sep 1857 in Lagrange Indiana. He died after 1930 in prob Franklin Co, TN.
William McConnell is shown in the 1880 census in Lagrange Co. , IN. He is single and is living near his brother Joseph.
In the 1880 census, his is listed as William McCormel. His full name was William Wilson like his father and his grandfather. Some distance away but in the same county in 1880, Barbara Shrock is shown as age 14 - housekeeper for John F. Weaver and wife Mary.
In early 1885, he moved to Cleveland, Tennessee (per letter from Lois McConnell to Mary Jane Marine). Sometime before 1892 he and his family moved near Tullahoma, TN(actually district 7 of Franklin county). About 1894, after Barbara's death, he remarried and in the 1900 census his wife is listed as Anna E. (b. 1875).
GCO lists William's wife as Mary. However, none of the census records list a Mary as his wife. Anna(Annie) is shown as his second wife in the 1910 census and she is still his wife in 1930 when he is 73 years(census record shows age 79). Also GCO's record for his children do not agree complately with the census record. GCO lists Mabel, Minnie and Oscar as William's children. Census records show Mabel, Minnie, Elmer, Raymond and Vernon.
