137. Claude Emmit MCCONNELL (William Josiah (Will) , James , William , Wilson ) was born on 27 Mar 1908 in Sherwood, TN. He died on 13 Oct 1984 in South Pittsburg, TN and was buried in Gilliam Cemetery-Battle Creek.
After his grandfather James died, Claude lived with his grandmother Lois until she died in 1930.
Claude attended a two teacher school on Battle Creek - the Battle Creek Institute. He graduated from high school at the Marion County High School in Jasper, Tn.
On August 8, 1941, Claude bought his farm from T. E. Coppinger & wife Fannie Bell. This land was owned by W. M. Cameron prior to 1931. (Register's Office Jasper Tn Deed book 4-F page 8).
Claude was a farmer. He was also a good carpenter and sometimes worked at that trade in the first years of his marriage. He built his own home on Battle Creek with the help of a black man (I believe his name was Clyde Gaines) on his farm of about 140 acres. He raised corn, soybeans, milo and hay for his livestock. He also raised chickens and sold eggs in South Pittsburg.
Claude and Allie Mae were active members in the Battle Creek Community and the Lou's Chapel Methodist Church. He used his skill as a carpenter to help maintain the church and to build an addition to it.
They were both actively involved with the 4-H Club and Farm Bureau organizations.
Claude was my father and I really never knew how to spell his first name. I have not seen his birth certificate but I believe his actual name was Claude although he preferred Claud. Mother wrote the name both ways.
Claude married Allie Mae ROSS, daughter of Charles Travis ROSS and Salonia Iberia(Lone) MOSELY, on 23 May 1941. Allie was born on 7 Dec 1910 in South Pittsburg, TN. She died on 13 Jul 1994 in Mason, TN and was buried in Gilliam Cemetery-Battle Creek.
Allie Mae graduated from St. Clair High School in Odenville, Alabama. She attended college at Florence State Normal and Carson Newman University. She also took correspondence courses from Chattanooga University and finished her work for a degree in teaching at State Teachers College, Murfreesboro, Tn. She taught school for 12 years and then became a full time mother when I was born.
Allie Mae was an active member of the Battle Creek Community and Lou's Chapel Methodist Church. After her children were grown, she taught G.E.D. for adults, substituted in Grammer School and was involved in Literacy programs.

Jim was a farmer and raised cattle and hogs along with crops of corn, soybeans and milo. I have many fond memories of Jim since we lived just down the road from his family and were often together.
